VC2B 1.0.2 Gui feedback

Hi !

I just purchased VC2B version 1.0.2 and like all other LinuxDSP software, the quality i excelent. The only thing I do not feel is optimal is the knobs. A quick look at the gui will not tell me the settings because the knobs are very bright silver coloured and the marker is white.

The PEQ is really much better and the question is, is the VC2B made to look exactly as a hardware thing and that made the knobs look this way or could this be fixed so a quick glimps will be enough to see the settings?

Sincerely, Anders

I think the on/off button is also hard to determine the position.

Maybe all this is because my high resolution laptop led screen?
I don't think this applies to other LinuxDSP products.

Sorry for complaining Smile

Thanks for the feedback - there's no reason why the controls have to look the way they do, they are simply modelled on 'standard' hardware control knobs (in some ways similar to the classic Moog knobs, but that's not to say that that is what they are specifically supposed to be)

It's more the case that reading the control position has just never been an issue during testing - however with the wide variety of possible screen resolutions / configurations, it's always possible that they are more difficult to read on some hardware.

You can click on a control and its numerical value will be displayed in the status display (as it is when the control is adjusted)

also, this is one of the first plugins to use GUI upscaling - it will attempt to determine the best resolution from the system dpi setting, and for settings above 96dpi (default for most screens) the UI will be upscaled accordingly. You can override the GUI upscaling (either if it is not appropriate for your screen, or to experiment with custome settings, by setting the 'LINUXDSP_DPI' environment variable before launching the host application e.g. from the command line, you could type:

LINUXDSP_DPI=120 ardour2

to launch Ardour2 with a pre-set custom DPI setting of 120 for any linuxDSP plugins which support the option (only the VC2B at the present time)

Thanks for following up.

I know that the values are shown if I click or drag something. The thing that bothers me with this latest plugin is probably most related to the color scheme of the knobs and nothing else.

Take a look at this screenshot and notice the difference (please)
The small white marker dots can easily be taken for a bling glare effect instead of a marker. The on/off switch is hard to see if it's on or off but if I toggle the switch I get the picture. Maybe the switch is the same as previous plugins so that might be less important in this message.

I am not saying things are bad but this new design is a lite bit worse in my opinion. Haven't changed the DPI but since the GUI takes up more than half my screen I suppose I should have no problem reading it, right ?

I am not visually impaired by the way Wink

Thanks for the screenshot - I'll see what might be possible in a future update, however I find I can distinguish the markers fine here (that's not to say I disagree, it's just that people see things differently and as I said, it's not easy to know how it will render across all types of screens / settings - the plugins are tested on a variety of different hardware)

It looks as though the UI is already being scaled up - so you could try to reduce it e.g. by setting the DPI variable to 96 and see if that improves the definition (This feature is still new, so it may take a little time to refine it - especially given that linux seems to have such a widely varying 'default' setting across various distros etc)

Ok. Thanks for your time and effort.

If no one else agree with my 2 cents I rest my case but if more people agree with me you could maybe consider changing something colorish Smile

Sincerely, Anders
