Hey - as I am reorganizing my studio, I realized that if I could emulate the Mackie controller protocol with my ordinary midi controller, I would save a serious amount of dough - does anyone have any experience in this field? The only tool for OS X that can do this is made by Opus Locus I think - and their site is down (gone?).

Does Mackie emulation work or is it better to get a real Mackie controller?

The Behringer Control series are capable of running as "Mackie" modules in either "Mackie Mode" or "Mackie Baby HUI". I have a BCF running in baby HUI mode, and BCR running as generic remote for FX. Both controlling Cubase.

Don't know of any still working "wrappers" for Mac/PC. There was a Mackie controller "emu" for Windows, but it needed ton of configuration and loopback devices to implement it into any host.

Hey my man - are you one hundred this applies to both controllers? I've read there is Mackie Mode for the BCF, but naturally my passion lies with knobs, and therefore the BCR could lie in my focus. Trouble is - I haven't seen anything about the BCR supporting Mackie, and I spend some time with Google on it.

The BCF is sporting a "native" Mackie Mode indeed. Two actually according to manual. I use the simpler mode (babyHUI), since it's to my impression a bit more straight forward.

The BCR does not have a "native" Mackie Mode. But there are presets roaming around on the net (also on the corresponding YahooGroup) that gives you a "somewhat" Mackie Controller - with one major disadvantage: the BCR will not be able to be configured for something else. And chances are, that setting up your host to that one is still a PITA.

I've been there, and thank god I could revert my BCR to default (reinstalled the latest update worked). I actually use two programs to control Cubase in Generic Remote mode. One with 7bit values, and one with 14bit (for more precise stuff). And one or two for software synths. So I can easily switch through BCR presets and use this device as I need it.

There is a thread in the hardware section where susiwong and I discuss this device and how to set it up. At least for Cubase. YouTube also sports videos for setting the BCF/BCR up for Logic.


It is not the holy grail, but way cheaper than a Mackie Control if you use both the BCF and the BCR. Wish I had the ProControl from AVID myself. But even though I "need to" use two devices - the BCF covers all my fader, panning, mute/solo/arm-for-record and transport control needs, the BCR covers all my custom VST plugin control needs. Got these two controlles on sale, never looked back.
