Basically its this:

========
Cameleon bmp2cam utility
bmp2cam reads in a greyscale bitmap file and translates it into a Camel Audio CA5000 Cameleon voice file (.c5v) for import and an evolving harmonic spectrum.

=======

Thanks for making this available. There are some PC programs that do this, but not as a C5000 utility! This is great. Going to try it out now!

DARN

Bug Report

It opens then closes real fast ( less then .0005 sec) on my Win98SE system. Must be Win98. I was really looking forward to this as it's up my algorithmic ally Sad

Hee-hee. That's why it's a sneak-peek only for the brave.

( It's a command-line utility, for now! Wink )

I downloaded the utility and spent some time creating special "fodder" images, with the utility in mind. I also tried it with a few random photographs that I scaled and converted to grayscale. The results are definitely interesting.

I hope you continue to work on this utility, and thanks for sharing it with us.

Tim - I think what you need to do is open a dos prompt, and then run it from there. Ie. cd into the correct directory, and make sure the bmp files are there too. Let me know how you get on - I guess this is the kind of thing you'll have a lot of fun with.

Cool - glad you're having fun with it. Please post your thoughts on how it could be improved, or any bugs with it, here. Eventually this will be integrated into Cameleon. Ie. you'll be able to click 'import' and then select a bmp, rather than a wav.

Thanks

Hopefully a release tonight with two new features: tempo calculation and spectrum-sequencing. Version after that will likely have a simple dialog GUI for easier public consumption. Wink

After that, we'll test it for a while and when it's ready it'll make the jump inside the CA5000 synth itself! Shit!

Have fun,

Yes - its the same idea as coagulite. Of course the great thing about being able to create Cameleon files, is that you can then morph between them, edit them or any number of other things that would be impossible with Coagulite.

Please test the program, and let Markleford and me know what (if anything) you would like it to do differently.

Thanks

I have a feature suggestion for BMP2CAM.

We can currently convert a grayscale image into a voice file. I think we should also be able to perform the reverse action, and convert a voice file into a grayscale image. I realize that as BMP2CAM is currently configured, it would only work with voices based upon a single sample, and it would ignore any noise component present in a voice.

That's fine with me. I just want to be able to export some data from a voice file, edit the data in a graphics program like Photoshop, and then import the edited image back into Cameleon.

Manipulating Cameleon voices by applying Photoshop filters to them (among other things) would be a really cool twist. Smile

thanks,

Y'know, I thought about that, too. The only caveat would be that it would put the envelope points at even intervals, as you can't store that timing information with the bitmap.

But that brought up an interesting concept: if you analyzed a wav, then exported to bitmap and back to voice file, the resultant envelope would experience a "non-linear stretch". Which might, perhaps, be interesting in itself.

Could the timing information be stored in either a second bitmap, a second image layer (requires an image format that supports layers, such as PSD), or possibly switch to 24 bit color images and store the timing data in one or more of the color channels?

Well, if it came to that I'd just output a companion XML file for the bitmap.

Otherwise, I could have to so that you'd export the bitmap *and* save the voice file. Then you'd edit the bitmap and combine it with the old voice file to make a new voice file.

But that's not where I'm headed right now! Wink
