Very cool. At about 1:00 in, it just lays right down in it. Tough to capture that kind of groovness on "tape". Congratulations dude.

Cheers for the thoughtful reply Matt. You know I admire your mixes. And I'm eager to learn. So please feel free to be candid.polyslax wrote:Cheesy? That's funny Chuck. That's extremely uncheesy imo, in fact it rocks a nasty groove and those guitar keys are awesome! I think it could maybe be a little less lofi, but yeah, whatever, it's very cool.
Less lofi?

Funny! I did hear that too-it's in the ' smokers Delight' loop that I used and I have to get rid of it or it will drive me nuts! I have moderate hearing loss from a lifetime of gigging-yikes! So I probably am not really hearing it.polyslax wrote:Oh I just meant it sounds like you've thrown a layer of hiss/noise/crackle down on the track to give it a dusty vinyl vibe. Maybe the noise is in the drum kit? Or just in my head?... always a possibility...any1particular wrote:Less lofi?
Thanks for pointing that out!

cheesy? no. groovy? yes.
i'm partial to a bit of hiss and crackle myself. if you find a loop has a little too much try programming a kick and snare to mirror the parts in the loop (not the entire groove as such, just the main hits - keep it simple) and mix them together. maybe add a little hat too. you'll get a touch more clarity while retaining the feel and noise in the loop.
anyway, i enjoyed this
neil.

Excellent suggestion Neil. I love those kinds of tips. I made a 'note' of it.macmurphy wrote:cheesy? no. groovy? yes.

smokers delight conjures images of Istanbul streetside tea houses. I lived there for 2 years. That is one amazing city where East meets West in more than a geographical sense.any1particular wrote:Funny! I picked up a Stanley Jordan thingy from this. Very cool and relaxing. I bought his Flying Home CD more than 20 years ago when I was in Istanbul!

Cheese-ectomy? FUNNY!
Certainly by Bob Jame's standard it is stinky cheese :^/
If I may bang my drum for a second? (pun intended!)
I actually toured parts of the U.S. with Bob James, Kirk Whalem and Alexander Zonjic (back in another life). I was actually Alexander Zonjic's (he's a local smooth jazz flutist that managed strike and adult contemporary 'hit' about 15 years ago) guitarist and Bob made quite a few guest appearances. He is really an outstanding musician-incredible live-like a spiritual experience and I don't say that lightly. He is from Traverse City Michigan...blah blah blah...
As I write this I'm checking out your music-Cold Sleep-NICE! Mooooooody. giving me the chills...bbbbbbbbrrrrrrr

Hmmmmmmmmm Istanbul. I just Googled it and instantly got a feel for it. I'll bet you loved that Mediterranean food too? (it is Mediterranean?) Sounds like you have many fond memories.....'tis fun that you shared that...
Stanley Jorden 20 years ago! Wow-that' going back. I can remember when he was first splashing onto the jazz scene. His unorthodox technic was intriguing to say the least-amazing.
Thanks Tim for Clicking in!

Wow, what a coincidence...it really is a small world. TBH, I actually like Bob James' own compositions very much, it's the cover versions that tend to veer into cheese territory (IMO anyway) Although I have to admit I love his version of 'Night on Bald Mountain' which is(again, IMO)...pretty cheesy
Anyway, thanks for your kind words about my track, and I was wondering which MIDI guitar you used for this piece?

Hey Mike-the 'Midi Guitar' is just my Strat with a GK-3 Pickup installed on it? A couple of years ago I bought the Roland GR-20 Guitar Synthesizer (comes with the midi pickup (GK-3)). The synth sounds rather cheesy to me-Unfortunatley I don't use it much for this reason? What's really cool though is I can trigger all the VSTs etc in my DAW-which as stated above is Ableton Live 8. The Rhodes on this track is Mr Ray. The tracking with the GK-3 is funky (by funky I mean it doesn't really track THAT well) but it is still way cool. I'm much more dexterous with a guitar than a keyboard.mikusan wrote:Hey Chuck,
