Shameless self-plug: I'm not sure if you guys know, but I make audio/music production related tutorial videos, mostly intermediate/advanced level material. I do most of the tutorials in Cubase or Pro Tools on OSX, but many of the techniques can be applied to most DAW's on both PC and Mac. If you find the subject interesting, check out a few and if you like them, subscribe to my channel. I make new videos every week.

http://www.youtube.com/ahjteam

Also feel free to suggest tutorial subjects you would like to see. Here are some of the tutorials/demonstrations I have already done:

- Sidechaining (released today!)
- Waves Maserati plugins review
- Comparison between SM57 and SM7b
- How changing the bass strings change the sound
- Importance of gain staging
- How to dial in Boss MetalZone so that it doesn't sound like ass
- Midi learn in Cubase
- Setting up a vocoder
- How to make a drum instruments from a multihit wav
- Programming drums to a song that wasn't played to a click
- Recording audio and video from a DAW in OSX
- Reversing drums without reversing some other element from the mix

And hopefully in the following weeks I can make a pitch correction tutorial (Melodyne/Autotune/Waves Tune/Steinberg Variaudio and Pitch Correct) if I get some material to pitch correct.

PS: I also promised that when I hit 75 subscribers, I will put out a new tutorial, need about 10 more Smile

Nice vids. Am looking myself into doing tutorials (if I can get off my lazy ass). One note about the snare in the mix tutorial. Distorting the output of plugins is not such a good idea in terms of gain structure. While using a limiter as the final plug of the chain limits the output, the output of the SPL and input of T-Racks is still distorting. Best to turn that down first and keep a good gain structure between plugins.

Why not? What exactly do you mean with "Distorting the output of plugins"?
I didn't see him distorting the output of a plugin. Are you talking about the level after the SPL?

Jim

Please give a reason for that. I disagree. If it sounds good it is good. I see no technical reason for what you said. Ahj said that he is doing it like this for sonic reasons which are valid to me.

Thanx! Smile

Yes Im talking about the level after the SPL. It may or make not make an audible difference depending on the plugin and the headroom. He mentioned that after applying the SPL the output was too hot so he used a limiter. That will limit the final output but it doesn't get around the fact that it is distorting between plugins. Just as turning your master fader in the a mix because the output is too hot doesnt get around the fact that its poor gain structure and can have audible detrimental effects.

If I wanted the snare to have more headroom, I would've just turned the output of Transient Designer down (that's why it has an output level control), but I'm using the Clipper for it's sonic characteristics, because I like how the distortion sounds like. Similarly why people like to use Distressors; because they distort in a nice way.
