What is this? Guitar synth emulating a jazz trumpet? Over the top of a funky dubstep groove? What?

Hello there and thanks for clicking in? :^/
This track features my trusty Strat outfitted with Roland's GK-3 pickup that's triggering the GR-20 Guitar Synthesizer. (no...you're kidding? no I'm not:))
This is totally improvised in the spirit of a 'real' jazz trumpet player. And so there are some sloppy moments where I get a bit lost. If one listens to the jazz greats, one will hear mistakes. Indeed-creativity IS allowing yourself to make mistakes. You know? When you're in 'the zone' you're not worrying about mistakes? You're just 'in the zone'. And it is an awesome place to dwell.
Please feel free to leave a comment and I would appreciate candid, constructive criticism. Do you hate the ever contentious dubstep WOBBLE? My wife hates it as does my good friend and supporter. It's frustrating because I find it fascinating and fun?

Wild and wonderful Chuck! Yes, the zone is a wonderful place to be and everyone should take a trip there... especially these days when you can edit or re-take your way out of any situation. Some great lines in there for sure tho Chuck, really nice work. While I'm no fan of the wobble in its natural state I fully applaud the way you'll grab alternate styles and mash them up... I love the openness and the freedom of that approach, and it can yield amazing results. Keep going man!

Mathew for Prime Minister!!!
Yes indeed and indoobitalby (that's British isn't it?) the zone is a great place to dwell and more peeps should dwell there Matt! We all share this music obsession here on KVR.
'Openness and freedom'? I love the way you articulated that! And you are completely free with your music as well. It is incredibly liberated. And having a positive attitude and sharing the love with others as well-oh oh-I'm in left field now-sorry.
'Openness and freedom'-that hits the nail on the head Matt. It is so liberating; having all these wonderful tools at our disposal-the challenge is to not be restrained by fear and doubt.
While I don't usually like to emulate REAL instruments (they tend to sound cheap and canned?) I kinda liked the trumpet in the Roland synth?
Anyway thanks once again for your encouragement!!!

Good stuff. I didn't notice you getting lost...
That's, um, a trombone as far as I'm concerned.
there is still that damned beh beh beh, which you seemed to have gotten married to. At least it's a little more in the back.
Regarding all of these elements trying to share the same space... I will impart to you the single most valuable remark anyone ever made to me, and is likely to [ Alden Jenks, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alden_Jenks ]: there's a lot of energy here. Subtract from it.

I enjoy all your tracks you post, but this was a standout from the last few for me. I like your expiremental electronic side more, even though you are a very talented jazz oriented guitarist when you add traditional sounding guitar stuff. I mean this is some tasty jazz guitar, albeit with the midi triggered trumpet, which I liked a lot even if the pitch tracking makes the sounds "quack" here and there. I wish I had some midi guitar pickup system and module. All I can do is try to fake it with midi keyboard playing by ear.
I find the use of the wobble bass in current dubstep genre annoying and non musically satisfying to listen to most of the time. Maybe in a club with huge wall to wall subs cranking it out is a different story, which I have yet to experience. But you are creative and make it enjoyable and nice to listen too here in a different genre type, and it gives the song some nice contrast. I always hear presets and wonder how I could make that sound useful in a different genre or context other than the typical dubstep sound.

the thing i always recommend to guitarists using midi to do horns is try a breath controller or an audio to cc plugin with a mic you blow on to get some breath control, midi cc#2, happenin.
otherwise your trumpet is stuck with a guitar envelope, whereas with it you free up a lot of expression.

Always happy to hear a post of anything you do.
Being a GI-20 user, I just ain't buying the horn. The style of articulations for your GI-20 setup or/and the sample player's layer mapping,(if any) isn't making it.
It sounds like something Yamaha cooked up. I own a Yam CS6R, so I know 'bout that.
Maybe have a try at AAS Saxlab, don't know really. To really connect with a horn emulation you'd need a good multi-layered horn sample set. I feel assured your GI-20 is setup for the proper velocity range and bend to do horn...so it's my guess it's the VSTi or the HW synth with the low level layers.
later on Chuck!

very nice piece. the guitar synth doesn't sound like a trumpet to me, but it sounds good, which is the most important thing. the only think i didn't like is that dubstep wubba wubba thing (sorry), but it was more in the background so it wasn't a total mood killer. what does it sound like without that, i wonder?

heh. I wasn't remotely expecting to be 'convinced' it's a horn, by a Roland guitar synth. it sounds good and it was good playing.
the track is awful busy with non-essentials IMO, is all.

Second post on KVR that has linked Poly with politics recently. The movement is gathering strength.any1particular wrote:Mathew for Prime Minister!!!
I really enjoyed this one. The trumpet sound was not totally convincing, but these things never are, and the overall effect was close enough for me to enjoy. The playing was something else altogether, and the notes themselves certainly sounded convincingly like what I imagine ought to be played on a "real" instrument.
I thought the wobbly bits were ok. I'm not crazy about Dubstep, but I like the mixing of styles here and this one certainly grooves.
Nice work Chuck.
Is there a vuvuzela setting on the GR-20?

Hey Jan-thanks for posting and your criticism has been noted and well taken! If I'm going to ask for criticism then I should not defend myself BUT-regarding the busyness of the track: I am usually guilty of 'over doing it' getting carried away with these technologies. However, I did sit in on a Funkadelics recording session with George Clinton many years ago. We didn't even get to the session till about 3am in the morning! I was with a bass player friend (he was asked to do the session and I came with him). Well... the studio was full of people and it was kinda like a party (drugs and other stuff?)-they would just let the tape roll all night long filling track after track after track (and yes-it was tape). They would capture allot of stuff and go back and edit the shit out of it. Well that music is quite dense-allot going on-of course it was so well executed it doesn't sound BUSY? Anyway thanks again! GObama!jancivil wrote:heh. I wasn't remotely expecting to be 'convinced' it's a horn, by a Roland guitar synth. it sounds good and it was good playing.

It's really kind of funny-it does sound more like a trombone-I don't know what the heck I'm doing but it's fun trying? lol!
Hey Johaan...thanks for posting and you are on my wifes side regarding the ever contentious dubstep WOBBLE? Hey Barry-you ain't buying the FAKE horn? Well I know what you mean-totally. hehe I actually recorded this track a couple of months ago-put allot of time into it and then went-UGG! and shelved it in the LATER DUDE folder. I revisted it a few dayz ago and thought 'hey, that's kinda cooleo bra' and posted it hear? It was fun though-even if it is cheazzzy and fake?annode wrote:Always happy to hear a post of anything you do.

Hey Andy. I needed to hear that! Thanks! You hit the nail on the head. That is what I'm trying to do with my music -draw from past experiences and apply it to the new? Whatever that is??? I don't THINK that dubstep is going away anytime soon-after all it's just another sub genre of electronic music? I THINK it'll continue to morph into more and more sub genres? I LOVE some of it!metalifuxx wrote:I enjoy all your tracks you post, but this was a standout from the last few for me. a very nice track! i too find the sound of the "fake trumpet" kinda distracting though. maybe it would be better to trigger a more synth-like sound.
