[color=darkred]Hello all, im having a little trouble setting up my workstation in ableton (and or similar daws like reason)

When i go into Live i know how to map the midi controls, however i do not have a million knobs and dials on my controller so i feel somewhat limited when running multiple plug ins + several tracks. I was wondering if it is possible to to have multiple settings on one device that i can switch back and forth from in the same session?!

So for example Ableton is running and i would like to use the sliders for eq, etc. I am also running massive and would like to make on the fly automation adjustments to the bells and whistles on there. meanwhile im running redrum/kong/droct as a slave and want to control those goodies(my controller manual has a preset for reason). But the prob is if i assign "dial 1" to the filter in massive and then try to assign dial 1 to reason, moving dial 1 moves both settings regardless of which is armed.

Sorry if this sounds a little confusing and retarded but im somewhat new to this stuff and it seems like such a simple feature yet i cant seem to get to work correctly. Any experienced users have some input?

Im using an m-audio oxygen49 midi controller although i feel like this ability would almost be universal as far as midi devices go. THANKS!!!! Help

You need to investigate Novation Automap. Many controllers require you to create a plugin or daw specific template to control your parameters of interest.

Automap permits automatic switching based upon which plugin is in focus. Once you understand that it 'automaps' according to the order in which the manufacturer presented the addressable parameters, you see that it isn't entirely automatic ... but it is still the simplest to map and save the mapping of any controller system I've ever used. All the mapping is done through a dedicated gui for the Automap program ... you don't have to touch the hardware or the plugin. Once you map as you like, you save it as the default and every time that plugin is in focus, your controller will be ready to go ... provided the controller is set to the same option of instrument, fx, mixer or cc mode.

If I was into Ableton ... which I used to be ... the Novation Launch Pad and Nocturn would be two excellent choices to give you Automap and perfectly compliment your M-Audio keyboard.

Is your oxygen a newer one? New ones have directlink built in so that it automatically maps the knobs to the first 8 parameters and sliders to the volume on each track, and then updates based on the track. Then theres hypercontrol on the axiom pros which is just a more advanced version. The mpk series of keyboards also automatically map knobs depending on device.

Try opening an instrument device on 2 channels that have a bunch of knobs and see if when you change tracks if your keyboards knobs automatically map and move between them.

Id also check and make sure in the midi settings in ableton that for your oxygen your using the built in ableton oxygen template and not 'none' or something else

I have the Novation SLMKII it's knobs and screen change to which ever effect plugin I have selected with the mouse in Live. I didn't have to set this up as Automap does it by default. I prefair using the mouse though.
The Zero is the SL MKII without the keys. http://www.novationmusic.com/products/midi_controllers/zero_ sl_mk_ii/

Korg nanoKONTROL2 might interest you http://www.korg.co.uk/products/software_controllers/nano2/sc _nano2.php

Ableton has it's own hardware controller the AKAI APC-40 it is set up for Lives controlls but it can be remaped to anything. I'm tempted to buy it for the extra lights. http://www.akaipro.com/apc40
