Sean, do you have any plans to add a delay ducking feature or enveloper follower like Timeless?

I don't have any plans to add additional parameters to ÜberMod. The plugin is complicated enough as is.

This weekend, I was sitting out on the deck with an old friend, talking about ÜberMod, and he referred to it as the "Exploding Space Modulator." I instantly realized that I had no preset titled the Pu-36 Exploding Space Modulator, and I needed to correct this deficit ASAP:

<ValhallaUberMod pluginVersion="1.0.1" presetName="Pu-36ExplodingSpaceModulator" Mix="0.507000029" Depth="1" StereoWidth="0.788500011" Delay="0.0777999982" Feedback="0.620000005" Spread="1" Slope="0.5" Skew="0" Random="0.851999998" TapGain="0.754166663" Diffusion="1" DiffSize="0.132653058" DiffModRate="0.0370370373" DiffModDepth="0.624000013" LowCut="0.125628144" HighCut="0.256281406" SpatialXover="0.145728648" DetuneRate="0.00200200197" DetuneDepth="0.5" VibratoRate="0.298245579" VibratoDepth="0.187999994" OverMod="0.567676783" DriveInGain="0.5" DriveOutGain="0.5" DriveNoiseGain="0.232222229" FeedbackRotate="0.5" SmoothingTime="0.0990990996" ColorMode="0" DelaySync="0" type="0.25" DiffEnable="1" Drive="1" DrivePrePost="0" Speed="1" InputPan="0.125"/>

It's a weird overmodulated multitap vibratoed seasick distorted feedback diffuse echo reverb thing. Really, it's just an excuse to use "Pu-36 Exploding Space Modulator" in one of my products.

Today is just an ÜberMod kind of day at Valhalla DSP Towers. Which is a nice way of saying "I am totally frustrated with programming in Juce right now, and need to make some funny sounds as a slightly more productive way of procrastinating."

<ValhallaUberMod pluginVersion="1.0.1" presetName="OverModulatedAmbience" Mix="0.275000006" Depth="0.83099997" StereoWidth="0.781499982" Delay="0.129999995" Feedback="0" Spread="1" Slope="0.948000014" Skew="0" Random="1" TapGain="0.5" Diffusion="1" DiffSize="0.104081631" DiffModRate="0.0370370373" DiffModDepth="0.624000013" LowCut="0.0854271352" HighCut="0.228643209" SpatialXover="0.190954775" DetuneRate="0.0640640631" DetuneDepth="0.0839999989" VibratoRate="0.06616541" VibratoDepth="0.467999995" OverMod="0.0404040404" DriveInGain="1" DriveOutGain="0.258333325" DriveNoiseGain="0.232222229" FeedbackRotate="1" SmoothingTime="0.0990990996" ColorMode="1" DelaySync="0" type="0.375" DiffEnable="0" Drive="0" DrivePrePost="0" Speed="0" InputPan="0.125"/>

This preset is a good illustration of how absurd something can sound when listened to in isolation, yet sound good in the mix. With this preset on an insert at 100% wet, it sounds kinda horrible: muffled, overly modulated, pretty crappy. Turn the MIX level down to 25%, and it acts like a pretty decent room ambience, especially on vocals. If you turn the DEPTH control down while the mix is at a subtle level, at some point it becomes less effective in the mix - even if the sound is way too lush when listened to in isolation.

This reminds me of the examples I have heard of the EMT250. The 100% wet sounds of that reverb, to my ears, are overly chorused, but this helps it out in the overall mix. The EMT250 is fairly unique when it comes to the "classic" reverb algorithms, as there are separate modulation processes for the output taps, in addition to the recursive loops, which makes for a very "wet" sound.

Just bought it recently, stunning effects palette, amazing relevance of overall parameters of one of the most versatile delay network of the moment, ( i'd say on last point, that you might even include a random button if needed...)

Surprised

Just turn up the MOD OverMod control. Things will get plenty random REAL QUICK LIKE.

Very Happy

Here's a few more OverModed sounds. The names were inspired by the comments on YouTube videos.

<ValhallaUberMod pluginVersion="1.0.1" presetName="GeniousVersusMoran" Mix="0.986000001" Depth="0.992999971" StereoWidth="0.5" Delay="0" Feedback="0" Spread="0.995999992" Slope="0.463999987" Skew="0" Random="0" TapGain="0.5" Diffusion="0.776000023" DiffSize="0.0571428575" DiffModRate="0.0490490496" DiffModDepth="0.5" LowCut="0" HighCut="1" SpatialXover="0.145728648" DetuneRate="0.00500500482" DetuneDepth="0.316000015" VibratoRate="0.162406012" VibratoDepth="0.175999999" OverMod="0.423232317" DriveInGain="0.375" DriveOutGain="0.75" DriveNoiseGain="0.333333343" FeedbackRotate="0.5" SmoothingTime="0.0990990996" ColorMode="0" DelaySync="0" type="0.166666672" DiffEnable="0" Drive="0" DrivePrePost="1" Speed="0" InputPan="0.125"/>

<ValhallaUberMod pluginVersion="1.0.1" presetName="SupurGenious" Mix="0.986000001" Depth="0.992999971" StereoWidth="0.5" Delay="0" Feedback="0" Spread="0.995999992" Slope="0.463999987" Skew="0" Random="0" TapGain="0.5" Diffusion="0.69599998" DiffSize="1" DiffModRate="0.0490490496" DiffModDepth="0.5" LowCut="0" HighCut="1" SpatialXover="0.145728648" DetuneRate="0.00500500482" DetuneDepth="0.316000015" VibratoRate="0.162406012" VibratoDepth="0.175999999" OverMod="0.423232317" DriveInGain="0.375" DriveOutGain="0.75" DriveNoiseGain="0.333333343" FeedbackRotate="0.5" SmoothingTime="0.0990990996" ColorMode="0" DelaySync="0" type="0.166666672" DiffEnable="1" Drive="0" DrivePrePost="1" Speed="0" InputPan="0.125"/>

I was trying to make something obnoxious, but the second preset gets into woozy MBV territory very quickly.

Hey Sean, any tips for preserving the attack when using ubermod as a chorus? I find that some choruses are able to to really keep the punch and some blur the sound and soften the attack too much. I find a number of the chorus presets in ubermod reduce the attack so I haven't thought of using it as a chorus much (just delays/reverbs etc.) But I'm open to suggestions. thanks!

Seriously, a randomize all parameters button is a really good idea I think. There's such a huge parameter space that I find tweaking a bit daunting sometimes and that would really help out in those cases.

A lot of the chorus presets in ÜberMod use diffusion and the multitap modes to spread out the attack of the chorus. This is useful for processing synth pads and the like. For punchier chorus, I would make sure DIFF is off, and that the TAP Spread is set fairly low.

A theory that is worth exploring: It might be worthwhile to reduce the treble content of the delayed signal, so that it interferes less with the transient in the dry signal. Most of the qualities that we perceive as "transients" result from high frequency signals that are in phase with each other. A modulated delay line will move the high frequency signals out of phase with the dry signal, thus smearing the transient - but if you get rid of a lot of the high frequencies in the delay signal, the transient smearing will be less obvious.

The following preset is an attempt to test the above theory:

<ValhallaUberMod pluginVersion="1.0.1" presetName="WarmAndPunchyChorus" Mix="0.5" Depth="0.5" StereoWidth="1" Delay="0.00620000018" Feedback="0" Spread="0.5" Slope="0.5" Skew="0.5" Random="0" TapGain="0.5" Diffusion="0.5" DiffSize="0.0204081628" DiffModRate="0.0490490496" DiffModDepth="0.5" LowCut="0.0954773873" HighCut="0.285427123" SpatialXover="0.150753766" DetuneRate="0.0490490496" DetuneDepth="1" VibratoRate="0.298245579" VibratoDepth="0" OverMod="0" DriveInGain="0.375" DriveOutGain="0.75" DriveNoiseGain="0.333333343" FeedbackRotate="0.5" SmoothingTime="0.0990990996" ColorMode="1" DelaySync="0" type="0.0416666679" DiffEnable="0" Drive="0" DrivePrePost="1" Speed="1" InputPan="0.125"/>

Listen to this preset at 100% wet. It sounds HORRIBLE. No high frequencies, not much bass. The idea is to mix this in with the dry signal, so that the chorus effect stays out of the way of the transients, and only the midrange is chorused.

If the above preset doesn't work for you, try the DimChorus2 preset in the Chorus folder. It is similar to the above, but with more high frequency content in the delayed signal.

I just wrote a new blog post, about using multiple instances of ÜberMod in series and parallel to create complex reverbs:

http://valhalladsp.wordpress.com/2012/08/21/building-complex -reverbs-using-valhallaubermod/

I was playing around with this the other day, and was honestly surprised at the results. ÜberMod was designed to do a lot of things, but "standard" reverbs weren't the primary goal. It turns out that ÜberMod can generate all of the components of a "complicated" reverb (early reflections, input diffusion, late reverb), and does a pretty good job at all of these tasks.

I always find myself surprised by what ÜberMod does. When I was coding this plugin up, I let the plugin take control of its own direction. I wouldn't do this again for future plugins, as the results are pretty complicated - I'd rather keep things at a smaller number of parameters. Still, the huge number of controls and modes allow for a lot of flexibility and versatility.

I just made a nice chrous preset and thought it can't hurt to share it!
It's very simple but I love it on warm pads and stuff like that:
<ValhallaUberMod pluginVersion="1.0.1" presetName="Vintage Chorus" Mix="0.550000012" Depth="0.5" StereoWidth="0.699999988" Delay="0" Feedback="0" Spread="0.5" Slope="0.5" Skew="0.5" Random="0" TapGain="0.5" Diffusion="0.5" DiffSize="0.0204081628" DiffModRate="0.0490490496" DiffModDepth="0.5" LowCut="0.0251256283" HighCut="0.597989976" SpatialXover="0.296482414" DetuneRate="0.109109111" DetuneDepth="0.75" VibratoRate="0.0175438598" VibratoDepth="0.100000001" OverMod="0" DriveInGain="0" DriveOutGain="1" DriveNoiseGain="0.444444448" FeedbackRotate="0.5" SmoothingTime="0.0990990996" ColorMode="1" DelaySync="0" type="0.0416666679" DiffEnable="0" Drive="1" DrivePrePost="0" Speed="0" InputPan="0.125"/>If you have Diva you should download the 10 free presets from my Future Retro bank and try it on the Beautiful Colours preset (bypass the internal effects first).
You can download the presets here.
Send the whole thing through a big Vroom preset and you got a really nice pad Love

Sorry for the semi-spam HiHi

Cheers
