this is your melody correct? I heard that and i came up with a whole song in my head instantly, i wish i could just put the sounds in my head and process that shit. Damn it would be so easy.

also could you help me out on this thread men?

yes indeed it is. Sure I'll provide a tutorial for that, nothing special really though..

for the piano I would try logics own EXS24 sampler pianos such as Yamaha Grand Piano or KORG M1, there's alot of different pianosounds there (like 50 different piano sounds I think)

Hey,

I've been trying to recreate this sound:

http://youtu.be/_fyyFFAmxIg?t=2m28s

The squary sawy lead that comes in, really simple sound and I've managed to get close with just sylenth1 and square and saw oscillators mixed, with some monolegato & portamento glide with "slide", but I don't get the grittyness that he has in his leads,

I was wondering if you guys could help me out to get this sound?

Thanks.

EDIT: this is what I came up with (the closest try)

I do have a Virus TI synth which I never use. The question really remains, how do I get the same sound? There's à zillion patches out there on the virus.. been trying it alot and therefore almost stopped using it, can you be more specific?

so I noticed that headhunterz is using Logic's clipdistortion which really makes the sound dirtier, but the question is how I get the rest of the sound "in the background" to blend with the actual lead? He said he was using ES2, Nexus and Virus TI for this lead in a tutorial.. whereas Nexus played the chords he said, and Virus TI was the lead

I think the secret is:
Stop thinking about what gear he used. Start thinking about the techniques used.

Also, there's a possibility that you will never achieve the same sound, because we all work differently, and in a good mix, changing one element changes the whole sound.

I don't think about what gear he uses, I'm just trying to recreate the sound as close as possible. And since he said he was using Nexus, ES2 and Virus TI, I thought it would make me come closer to the sound. I would still need someone to explain or help me out how to make it that fat and big, it's obviously layered with alot of stuff, I really want something that is really close to this.

hi jontah,

i only have listened to the video once but mainly this is a square wave, maybe with pulse modulation and a lot of chorus, detune, filtering, reverb and delays. and either distortion or bit-reducing.

if you dont get along with 1-2 waveforms, try eq-ing the top end more precise and mixing several oscs with different eq together. also try to add triange or saw to it if it isnt full enough. but i think it is mainly square with effects.

hey man, good point, I've tried those techniques though, he uses some kind of producer trick to make this lead.

This is the closest I got, distortion is probably what's behind the trick:

The technique you're looking for is oscillator sync, which Sylenth1 is incapable of.

now this was what I was looking for! cheers alot man!

What exactly is oscillator sync? I read it on wikipedia and I understand what it does, but I find it hard to hear the difference in the video you just linked. Sometimes theory is understandable but when putting it down to practical use, it's hard to hear a difference

Does VIRUS TI have this?

I believe this is why Headhunterz is using the ES2, because it has a square SYNC and saw SYNC mode, I re-watched his tutorial and indeed he has it set at SYNC.

I mean what's the difference from just setting it at a pulsewave or sawwave?

Wikipedia doesn't explain it very well. Have a read of this instead http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/nov02/articles/synthsecrets1 102.asp
