I'll just leave this here...
http://soundcloud.com/admiral-quality/happy-jam-with-simon It went like this, I laid down an 8 or 16 bar drum loop, playing pads to control Steinberg LM4-Mk II drums. We looped that. Then another pass of two tracks, Simon on my American Jazz Bass (playing upside down as he's a lefty!) and me on Steinberg's The Grand piano with a hammer action keyboard controller. Jamming to a piano riff that I'd already had bothering me for a few years previously. Then another overdub of Simon on his (left handed) Strat and me on organ. I'm playing it on a Korg CX-3 with a second manual below it, but I can't recall whether we're hearing the pure CX-3's sound, or one of the various plug-in organs, or some combination of both. Sorry, it was half a lifetime ago. Still, I think this kicks butt. It's a dumb, happy riff that I've had stuck in my head for 15 years. But check out the funk and "chuckin' to Jah music" around the 9:57 mark. As well as the Curtis Mayfield-esque action around 10:42. Woah, I forgot we had recorded this, just ran across it now. I know, it's long and long winded. This is how we write... But whaddya think of the virtual and silent studio? The neighbours were not disturbed by the making of this, all the amps and half the instruments are virtual! (Actually that's not quite true. I believe the guitar amp was a Fender Twin Reverb Reissue, through a THD Hot Plate's line out, then into the computer. Then in software the application of some cabinet and room sim complete the illusion! But it was entirely silent in reality. |
