I'm using Vienna ensemble pro and it's best to turn the Wifi/airport off when working... So I'm looking for a midi controller works thru USB not thru Wifi.
Any suggestions? |

I use a Line 6 Midi Mobilizer for non-Wifi control but not all apps are compatible.
For USB, I believe this site has information you might find helpful: http://iosmidi.com/devices/ |

I use a genuine apple camera connection kit and an m-audio UNO midi interface. The cheap unbranded cck's don't work and not all midi interfaces are compatible but that combo works for all the apps I've tried and Lemur works well so I'm happy. ---- No, that Glitch is meant to be there..... http://soundcloud.com/punisha http://www.myspace.com/punishadubs |

There are quite a few MIDI interfaces that are designed to work directly with the dock connector, such as the MIDI Mobilizer and the iRig MIDI, as well as the more advanced iConnect. |

Not all M-Audio UNOs work either (like mine with a genuine CCK).... |

Yes, sorry. The old model UNO's don't work but the iosmidi site you were pointed to earlier in the thread explain what works an what doesn't. Sorry for misleading. ---- No, that Glitch is meant to be there..... http://soundcloud.com/punisha http://www.myspace.com/punishadubs |

Any suggestions? I am wondering for that as well. So far, a direct connection between an iPad and a PC/MAC (apart from WiFi) does not seem to exist. Are there any technical reasons which prevent developing app + PC/MAC driver, which would allow using the iPad as a MIDI device which is connected simply using the same cable, used to charge via USB and connect via iTunes. On the PC side, the iPad appears as a USB device, similar to a camera, i.e. only the folders containing pictures are visible. Would it not be possible to write an app, which makes the iPad appear as a MIDI device to the PC or MAC??? Cheers, Martin |

You guys are overcomplicating things, I think--I can control the Ipad via a direct USB connection using the camera connection kit (using an AKAI LPK25.) In addition, I can use the aforementioned M-Audio UNO to use a standard MIDI controller--last night I was using my MicroKorg as a contoller, but any midi controller will likely work.
Finally, using the same UNO connected to the midi outs on my PC's audio interface and the USB once again connected to the Ipad via CCK, apps are able to accept both Midi clock and midi sequences sent from my DAW. It should be noted that the only thing I bought for this to all work was the Camera Connection Kit--all the rest of this stuff was generic midi hardware I already owned. So, basically, there is no need to reinvent the wheel or invent something new to use midi with Ipad. It has robust MIDI functionality right out of the box, provided you have the right connectivity. |

Hi, I am not sure whether I was clear before. I definitely don't want to overcomplicate things. Rather the opposite. I am aware about the CCK solution. But that requires basically two MIDI interfaces: one connected to the iPad through the CCK and one to the PC. Please tell me wrong about this setup: iPad <-> CCK <-> Midi Interface <-> standard MIDI cable <-> MIDI interface <-> PC. Right now, all my available INs and OUTs at my PC Midi interface are in use with hardware gear. So I would need two new MIDI interfaces plus the CCK. I am just wondering whether it would be possible to write software which could replace that all by the USB dock cable, which already comes with all iOS devices... In my opinion, that would simplify the setup a lot... Martin |

Two thoughts, Martin:
The M-Audio UNO is both a midi cable and a small midi to usb interface built into one. So yes, my setup encompasses two interfaces, in that sense.
Second, the CCK is required to place the Ipad into "USB Host mode". Without it (or a similarly configured connector), the Ipad won't connect to external hardware. The standard dock cable will therefore not likely work. |

Yes, two of those would be quite cheap. But the problem is that both would have male connectors. Is it possible to perform a gender change operation, i.e. changing the connectors on one of them to female ones? jjmcjj wrote: Second, the CCK is required to place the Ipad into "USB Host mode". OK, that might be an explanation why such apps do not (yet) exist. But then, is it not just a software issue to determine in what mode the iPad is? In fact, it does behave as a USB camera, when connected. Would it not be possible to change that mode by an app, or is that somehow prevented by Apple? Cheers, Martin |

I creating a user update-able list of both MIDI and Audio devices that work with iOS devices: http://www.iosaudio.co/devices
You can add new devices and update existing ones. You can also mark devices as "works for me". So we can get an idea of how many people a device is working for. |
