Thank you, Rob! For me, this is the best part of this whole thread. Smile

Given that Albino is already a classic software synth (and at least as much loved as, for example, Moog synths in the hardware domain), I just cannot imagine that there won't be much demand for it. But let's see.

I'll throw in on the Albino love.

Long time user. Fell in love with the sound long ago. Albino continues to make it into nearly every track I write.

Disappointed to see Rob's stance. Seems like the motivation is that allowing a new Albino to load old presets would decrease sales of RP synths. Would it really?

Yep, just like to second whats been said, Albino is a great synth with a great sound and it would be a shame to see it be discontinued.

this isn't directed at Ecamburn, but everyone who said what he rehashed.

First off, Rob can do whatever he wants.

Second, what does it say in the legal contract he has with Linplug?

Contracts are legally binding. Software is a business.

Mad

BTW I downloaded Predator demo yesterday and it sounds wicked. It's on the top of my list to buy. Already made it into one of my tracks that I thought was finished! Shocked

I don't think anyone argues Rob doesn't have right to do what he wants. I think people think it's sad that he doesn't want Albino to be developed further - or let a new synthesizer be able to read old presets.

Not specifially aimed at you - but to all those who've been arguing that Albino has run its course, obviously doesn't have visions. The Virus started its life at the end of the 90s and is still a force to be considered.

And for the notion that software is business - which of course is true. But Business is not just about selling X number of copies of something. And have been echoed a couple of times in this thread - I doubt a new synthehsizer from Linplug that could read Albino presets (from third party or whatever) would have any impact on sales of Rob Papens products.

I think it would have been a grand gesture of Rob to let Peter implement a function to import old Albino sounds - letting Robs first big synthesizer live on as a classic. A gesture like that would have generated lots of goodwill towards Rob. Now (my highly personal thoughts here) his immediate position is no-never-over-my-dead-body which shows a side of Rob that I've never seen before.

Goodwill is irrelevant. It's business, and presets sell synths, so it will affect sales. Lets look at the fence from above: Peter made the first move, making an announcement (a clearly unfounded and definitely not arraigned announcement). RP's only rebuttal is to set things straight. Peter was clearly in the wrong here, not RP.

Albino Presets will affect sales of RP synths 0%. Certainly a lot of great stuff in RPs lineup, but nothing IMO that Linplugs continuance of Albino compatibilty would hurt.

Not to me Shrug it means a lot actually. I'm not saying this in regards to Linplug or Rob Papen, just in general. I don't like to give my money to assholes.

My advice to all developers: don't be a dick.

Ye, but to have them load you will technically have an "Albino" imbedded in whatever the new synth is... that's not right Shrug

There are a few synths that load sysex patches from old synths, is this 'not right' as well?

OTOH file formats are not intellectual property. Anybody can do a synth the loads Albino presets, there's nothing wrong with that. If the presets sound exactly the same or not is a different story, but is out of he hands/influence of the sound designer.

Regardless of all that, Peter made an announcement without prior arrangement of the the "terms". This is a clearly business decision, and therefore I guess we just have to respect RP's decision. I'd imagine there's more to it than just "I'm over Albino, so we're stopping it"... I care not to speculate tbh.

Of course there's more, and we shouldn't even speculate. But thing is, as a user I'd rather have a synth that loads Albino presets than have my investment in soundbanks die. If Peter doesn't do it for whatever terms then somebody else might.

The gist is, the quote of Rob where he states that he won't allow his presets to be loaded into a different synth is just not his call to make. That post got me quite worked up tbh, and I spent quite some time digesting it. I can totally understand Rob's position, but nothing makes it right IMHO.

Reminds me of the old days with AKAI sampler format. At some point it became a standard and every sampler could load it. If you had an S1000 and an E4, you could load all them factory sounds into the E4 and enjoy.

Comfirmed then. Looking forward to loading my Albino sounds into Zebra. Wink

And its not just about his presets. I bought other soundbanks for Albino and did my own sounds as well, its a synth after all.
Not sure how it is justified that he prohibits loading these into another synth.

It seems to me he could also sell his old sounds as-is or with some easy enhancements to new users Shrug
