Hey guys,

I'm trying to re-create these chords. I really like them, and to practice, I recreate chords and melodies of tracks that I like. Anyway, I have been at it since yesterday afternoon, and just cannot seem to get the underlying chords right. I have the file in FL Studio with a LP filter to try to hear them, but I just cannot get it. If anybody could help me with this, it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Step One: Try finding the bass notes. Keep peckin' 'till you get it.
Step Two: Take the most direct route. Try adding parallel thirds to the lowest notes. Where are you close and where are you far away? If far away, experiment with a different interval over the bass...like a perfect fourth.

You'll get it.

Thanks for the help. I have the bass already (at least I'm pretty sure I do) and obviously the top melody is easy, but it is the mid notes of the chord that are frustrating me. Usually I can spot out the chords of these kinds of tracks fairly easily, but this one is giving me fits. Maybe the low quality of the audio is affecting my ear? Anyway, here is what I have so far. Maybe you can guide me along further?

I found this: http://www.nonstop2k.com/community/midifiles/7451-avicii-id4 -house-midi.html

Can't tell if it's the right chords though.

Anybody else have any advice? I've been studying this for 2 days now, and am having the hardest time. I really like the power of the underlying chords, that is why I want to figure them out so bad.

This is a variation of one of the most common pop progressions there are. You really should keep trying... It takes a while to be able to identify chord progressions easily.

What you need to improve your skills do is play a whole bunch of classic songs yourself, and learn their chord progressions and how they sound. Then you'll find it easy to identify them when you hear them again. Use Google to search for the chord progressions used in past classics and practice, practice, practice. You'll quickly notice that most pop is based around a few very simple progressions with the odd variation here or there (e.g. I-IV-V-IV (the three chord trick), I-vi-IV-V, I-V-vi-IV and its close relative vi,IV,I,V crop up all over the place in pop).

Btw, the tip of focussing on the bass is a good approach in general.

Thanks for the tips. I think I have it pretty close. Did you look at the mp3 and midi file that I posted? It seems close, but a not or two off.

OK, so I have read a bunch and come up with this midi file.

Now, it seems like the song is in D major, so basically I just used a variation of a I-IV-V progression. It's certainly close, but it doesn't have the same "power" that the original track has. Almost like it sounds too "happy." Am I in the wrong scale? Or is this a result of sound design more than anything? Any comments would be appreciated.
