The Additive Editor chapter of my Alchemy series is now available on the Camel Audio site here.

Youtube link to follow.

This chapter shows how to tweak imported samples by manipulating the component partials' amplitude, pitch and panning envelopes. Also demonstrates creating more abstract additive sounds from scratch.

Feel free to provide feedback or criticism, or ask questions if anything doesn't make sense.

Thanks for the heads-up Dan. It's great that Camel has you doing such high-quality tutorials available for free viewing.

Great, been waiting for that one.

I already thought you've been done with tutorials for Alchemy...
Nice to see you still continuing. Smile

Thanks, Dan

and Cheers...

Wow. Shocked I'll be watching this many times to wrap my head around it.
As usual, an excellent job. The examples are especially appreciated. Thank you, Dan.

Is that version 1.3 I see?

Fantastic tutorial as usual Dan, inspiring me to dive into the additive engine a bit more, not so daunting and confusing after watching that. Smile

just watched it and i'm really amazed

i, for one, was so exclusively focused on resynthesis engine that i didn't have a clue on such sophisticated features on so to say, classical additive synthesis

the passage about hardware and LFO controlled morphing techniques between different additive profiles on related breakpoints seems tremendously effective,

i really learn't something about alchemy i didn't expect at all !

Surprised

Great tutorial! I thought I knew the most about the additive editor but apparently not. I was playing with it a couple of hours after watching the movie and came up with a pretty cool reso sweep-ish sound. I didn't use more than a few partials so it sounds a bit dark but you can download it here if you want to examine it. The first patch has a short decay to make it more percussive. The second has the stretch knob at zero and is driven by a lfo with the trigger off.

A good video, thanks! I'd like to see a more complex example, too. The organ was fairly static. It would be nice to see Alchemy doing more crazy stuff with the additive editor.

Thanks for the feedback. I was originally planning to include a second example, but I couldn't squeeze the timing any more: its 3 minutes over my guideline as it is, and quite densely packed already!

You're right, the organ is very static. I tried loads of other examples, but eventually settled on that one as it was easy to hear the resulting changes in the sound (probably because it was such a static sound to begin with) which makes it easier to understand the concepts I'm explaining .

I also thought it was fitting to be using a modern digital additive synth to tweak the sound of a vintage electro-mechanical additive synth... but maybe thats just me HiHi

What a wonderful tutorial! I've not gotten into the additive editor much before but this made me really eager to do so. Additive synthesis seems to really fit in with the way I like to think about sound design, so I'm grateful for you taking the time to demonstrate how easy alchemy's additive engine really is.
