Hey!

Been really inspired by Madeon which has the same typish of sound as coldplay in some bits of his songs (probably sampled or just inspired by coldplay).

Here's an effect I'd like to achieve which Coldplay uses:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTFBJgnNgU4

The song in the start.. sounds like just a vocal loop with reverb but it's probably more than that because I cannot get the same vibe of it. Is it layered with something?

Also, is the dry/wet knob on the reverb set to 100% to achieve this effect?

Where can I find the same type of sample? sounds like some kind of indian song or something haha. Or childs singing.

Any suggestions? library or homepage?

Thanks!

Well first the voice is pitched, and then they use mainly the "wet" signal rather than the "dry" one to give the voice a more distant dimension (use a Hall algorythm for the reverb). I think it is also filtered, great low cut with a little boost on the mid/high mid so it sounds more "phone/radio" style. There is also some delay added. Maybe you can also try to add some overdrive or a very gentle saturation to enhance the phone aspect and the voice details.

Great! Thanks! so you mean the dry/wet knob is set to 40% wet approx? or even less?

Also, what type of sample is used? where can I find similar samples?

The wet is more important than the dry in this case, I would say about 70% of wet and 30% of dry so you mostly hear the reflected/reverbered sound rather than the original one.
Concerning the voice, maybe they sampled Martin's voice and then pitched/streched it to make it sound really high and cartoon. You can do that with whatever voice sample you want, the only condition is to find a voice sample which is "nude" I mean without too much music behind (cause here the voice is the only thing you wanna use and morph).

OK, the problem would be the sample I guess.. finding the RIGHT sample..

I tried using this sample:

but it didn't get close at all haha.

They tend to get their sample or voice really busy, sounding like there's 3 other sounds too

Try inhaling some helium and then recording your voice with a cheap microphone, plus you can sing your own vocals then, or check out these guides to see if they help.

Well if you want to reproduce exactly the same material, I think you're wasting your time. You won't have the same sample either the same effects, what is interesting for you here is to start from this idea and try to bring it to your own vision and style...The pitching/stretching part is important, don't forget it!

that video didn't really give anything tbh, it sounds VERY VERY suddle. Ain't this possible in Logic though?

Yes exactly. I'm looking for something similar though, and I don't know what sample to use nor how to blend the effects. The reverb + delay doesn't get me close at all, so don't know what I'm missing :/

in Logic you can just use the pitch shifter plug as an insert; crank it all the way up until it sounds like a chipmunk. go to the channel EQ and experiment; there is a telephone preset you can experiment with, although it kind of just sounds like a high pass filter to me. then put some delay on a send and turn the send up just a bit (maybe try the sample delay). make another send with a hall reverb on it and crank up the send to your liking (it's mostly the effected sound you're hearing). you can do this in Logic in no time.

if it was my track, I probably would have had the repeating section on it's own track and the other melody by itself. I don't think that the repeat is from a delay. I would probably use the marquee tool, highlight the section I want to repeat and then just drag it where i wanted it while holding down option). i personally think it would sound cooler if the repeat was a little different from the first. maybe panned differently than the first with a bit of grit to it and a slightly thinner EQ on the repeat.
