My first DAW was Sonar 3, probably around 10 years ago, which I faithfully updated through Sonar 6. Man, if it wasn't painfully glitchy (on hardware that ran Live, Reaper and Reason with no complaints), I'd probably still be using it.
I'm not against "bloat" as long as the music keeps flowing out of my speakers. I hate to say it, but reports about gaps in the audio pretty much validate my decision to dump it. |

to be honest... Reason is a watered down app compared to Sonar, Cubase, Ableton, DP, Logic, Reaper, you name it... as far as "features" go... if we are honest about the subject matter... it seems like when Reason added the dongle, audio, RE and other "newer" features i.e. the feature other DAWs have had for years... Reason has become more unstable than the past... i think this unstableness (i know not a word) comes from higher CPU usages when using Reason... those other products i.e. Cubase, Sonar, etc... have always flirted with the CPU celling... i.e. why they are unstable!!! in other words... to compare Reason stability to other DAWs stability is not a good comparison!!! apples and oranges!!! |

I might have another go at Cubase. It was my first sequencer. Then I went to Cakewalk Pro Audio.
X2 features are meaningless when the thing is so buggy. Today, a bunch of my vsts just "disappeared" for no reason. Had to reinstall them. SONAR is the only app I use that crashes, it has been crashing since X1 came out, X1d still does, and every install I've done on three different Win7 installs has been the same. And I only run solid vsts, mostly 64-bit. Makes no difference, it crashed last night when importing a small audio file into a new tune with nothing in it yet ... ---- Crime in multi-storey car parks. To each his own I guess but I love the X1 Gui. Trying Studio one and Cubase LE made me apperciate Sonar in some ways though lolI know it's all customizable and such, but everything is so far spaced out, and the buttons in the toolbar are enormous--just so inefficient. Seems like they're trying to gear up to make their GUI touch-compatible, but man, it made my eyes bleed. Going back to Cubase after a couple hours of that made me really happy to see such a well-thought out GUI (aside from the terrible mess that is Cubase's window-management). Sometimes trying out a new DAW can make you realize how much you like the one you already use. Thanks Cakewalk! edit: I will say, to be fair, that there were a lot of things I liked about X1, but not nearly enough to make me forgive that horrid GUI. Also, the installer wouldn't let me change the location of the demo content. My main drive is a 120GB SSD, so I don't want any kind of sample content wasting my precious space. Another big fail for X1 there, as it made me install it to my C drive, and would not let me change it. |

Do you see anything in X2 that warrants giving them more of your cash and having a less stable DAW? I don't. I'll be waiting for the sales next year, then I might wait 'till X3, if I'm still eating Cake ... ---- Crime in multi-storey car parks. I have not had any crashes since X1c...nor do I have any freezes or such that I had experienced previously either. ---- Barry The man who survived mustard gas and pepper spray is now a seasoned veteran http://www.ambientonline.org/ |
