I used an iPod touch 8gb for awhile a loved it. I even did a video using an MPC 2000X, iPod Touch, SampleTank iOS and iRig MIDI.

I used one for quite a while until I got the new iPad....much bigger screen and easier to use, but it can be done on iPod touch...I did 2 songs on my album with it.

This is my sentiment exactly. For me, it is much too small to do regular music on. The screen size would hamper my workflow and ability to quickly do things. I started out with one, and ended up taking it back and getting an iPad 2. I am very happy with my decision (except I wish I had purchased one with more than 16gb of RAM). If I were to purchase everything all over, that would be the one thing I'd change. Audio apps take up a lot of space, and there needs to be room for projects too.

I think it does depend on the app / what you want to use it for. If you want to make complete tracks with synths, drum machines, DAWs etc. then the iPad is the way to go, but if you want to plug in your guitar or mic and use some effects, pedals, amps etc. then the iPod Touch is a great size for that.

I could see that, working on the iPod Touch made me want to get an iPad. The sound was great and it worked, but after a while I was wishing I had a bigger screen to edit the sounds. I just didn't want anything bigger than the MPC so I could focus on the sound.

Wow, it's now a possibility that we could see a garage band that actually uses GarageBand.

The Support band

Things have changed a lot since 1978 when I was in my first garage band.

I'm not in a band but I enjoy making music on iDevices.

I bought an iPod Touch and Akai SynthStation25 last Christmas for mobile purposes. There wasn't very many mobile synths (battery operated with speakers) around so I went the Apple/Akai/battery powered mini speakers route. I was pleasantly surprised with the available apps (though not too many compatible with the SS25).

Being an old geezer compared to most of you here, I found the Touch to be a bit too small for these old eyes. However, I totally enjoyed the mobility (without the SS25) to slip into my pocket and make music while standing or sitting in line somewhere.

Thus came the new iPad. I saw where there were several cool apps only available for the bigger unit so I grabbed one when they hit the stores. So much better on the eyes and a few new apps to boot.

Speaking from experience, I would buy the most available memory units to keep from getting boxed in. My iPod Touch memory is only 32 Gb but I went with the 64 Gb iPad. Music, samples, apps, data can take a good amount of memory so buy the most that you can afford.

I thought about selling my Touch but it can be quite useful in tandem with the iPad in various ways. Bluetooth WIST and WIFI can bring many new conceptions into reality.

Good luck with whatever device you decide on.

Not for a band but to experiment with different music scales I use a program call ThumbJam on my iPod Touch.
Here's a video showcasing that.
