just looking to my records and see i don't have many ost albums, can you recomend some interesting ones?
the ones i have ,
African Swim & Manny & Lo - john lurie
kids - folk implosion
(must have more don't know where)

then ...many years ago i became more computer music "fan", maybe my alternative taste got ..lost? ...but that got nothing to do with it..just looking for some good ost albums, thank you.

The soundtracks to David Lynch's work are usually interesting. Lost Highway is a good one - the usual sidekick of Angelo Badalmenti (whose work is great, check out the Twin Peaks TV OST) but with input from Trent Reznor as well (and produced by him).

The work of the prog band Goblin is interesting. They did a number of soundtracks for Dario Argento.

I always really liked the soundtrack for Wong Kar-wai's In The Mood for Love - the achingly beautiful Yumeji's theme (from another film), plus similar string music and then the slight jarring of familiar tunes in an unfamiliar tongue with Nat King Cole's Spanish versions of his hits. Mind you, I really like the film and the soundtrack is as much about evoking memories of the film (and Maggie Cheung ) as the music itself.

i would also have suggested the twin peaks soundtrack.

Dead Man

That's a great one, love it.

If it's more left-of-centre stuff you're looking for then maybe Thurston Moores 'Heavy' soundtrack. Pretty minimal, chiming guitars etc etc.

And as WR sez, Dead Man. Epic.

Dead man, how could I not check that one??? ..remember loving the movie and because of the music too, ( think it is one o my fav movies). In the mood for love, remember seeing it when it come out , have good memories but don,t remember the music, gonna check this one for sure.
thanks for mention david linch too, is one of those cases ..i mean I know the music is good, always read mentions about it, remember it from the movies, but never bought any ..i think its time.

Akira, the 1988 manga - I recommend the 10 track version. There's a four track with voices (in japanese) and soundeffects, but you may as well put on the movie without looking at it.. Haven't heard the five track "Symphonic Suite", supposedly the same as the four track without voices and soundeffects...

One advantage of the four track is that the ten track version is unfortunately re-recorded for release as a soundtrack.

Some intense stuff, almost better than the movie IMO.

The OST for Tekkonkinkreet by Plaid is really rather wonderful!

+ 1 to Goblin! Great band. Start with Profondo Rosso (The album version, not the reissue with multiple versions of each track.)

I actually prefer the modern remix of the title track from the reissue, it's got more power and is very ominous

wrt lynch, the "straight story" ost is lovely, acousticcy, very different from the others (as is the film itself); calexico did a decent one for the "committed" movie; yo la tengo did "junebug" ost; flaming lips did "okie noodling" and of course, "xmas on mars" osts

I'd recommend to check out OSTs from Animes (also series).
Some of those have really incredibly great music.
I like especially the tracks of some series from the 80s.

The cool thing is, that it sounds different from most music you get in the western world.

For a start:

- Everything from Joe Hisaishi (film music for all Hayao Miazaki films)
It's mostly symphonic, although some of the earlier films also include a lot of synth work.
- Neon Genesis Evangelion (some symphonic, some pop, some other genres)
- Vision of Escaflowne (mostly symphonic)
- X (lots of great sounding string pieces, other styles)
- M.D. Geist and M.D. Geist II (synths, e-guitars, vocals, japanese 80s sound)
- Bubblegum Crisis (japanese 80s sound at its best)
Even Sailor Moon has some great music.

I really liked Underground's soundtrack for Danny Boyle's much-neglected "Sunshine" - but you should really experience it with the film, as the film's electronic foley and electronic soundtrack just merge together into one glorious mass.

I am also inordinately fond of Michael Nyman's creaky old pump organ and revival band soundtrack for "Ravenous", my favorite movie about cannibalism.
