Which was for you the best freeware plugin released in 2012?
It's difficult to please everyone, so... I've kept the list short with only the most talked about during 2012.

Interesting that they are all 'mixing' plugins and no creative effects.
It has been the year of EQ and Compressor emulation both free and paid, rather boring in a way.

Though loads of amazing plugs have been released for free

The problem with asking this question and having a limited list is that there might be nothing on it that anyone is interested in. I've downloaded free stuff this year, but nothing on that list.

WOW! Hard to choose only one. I voted for TDR comp, but Limiter6, DC1A are fantastic too. All the items listed are great.

I voted for StereoChannel. There's nothing like it on the freeware world. PSP VintageMeter doesn't work on my Windows 7. The other ones are GREAT but i have better paid alternatives.

-Distorque Azurite chorus
-Distorque Vitamin C (Orange Squeezer compression pedal)
-Distorque Face Bender fuzz
-TSE R47 (RAT pedal emulation)
-TSE 808 v2
-Ignite Amps SHB-1 bass amp head
-Ignite Amps PTeq-1a (Pultec emu with tube input/output stage modeled)
-One Small Clue Orange Chorus
-TAL-Chorus-LX

There might be a handful of other overdrive/dirt pedals and maybe an ampsim or two that I missed.

This was the year of free very good overdrive/dirt pedals and chorus plugins for me. I think there was a spring reverb plugin that was decent and released in this year too. Guitarists were definitely taken care of good this year, but you can use those effects on anything else.

Most likely, Voxengo OldSkoolVerb 2, because I often use it HiHi

But StereoChannel, Limiter6, DC1A, TDR Feedback Compressor, PTeq-1a is also brilliant!

P.S. In addition, "The Old JB VST Plugin Bundle By Jeroen Breebaart Is Now Freeware!". Highly recommended.

More magware than freeware but DiversionFX CM could be my pick of the year. Very versatile.

And NIs new Driver is showing plenty of potential (only free this month though).
