Postby Neon Breath; Wed Feb 13, 2013 10:12 pm Alchemy sound morphing experiments

Hi all!

I spent many hours lately exploring and experimenting with Alchemy's morphing feature, trying to seamlessly morph from one sound to another. I kept hearing - and knew- that Alchemy was capable of morphing two or more sources, but I've never heard anything interesting so far from anyone, and myself I never been able to really achieve interesting results except some distorted, disappointing and useless morphed sounds. So I decided to dive into it more seriously to see what can really be done with Alchemy's morphing tool. I've spent lot of time importing sounds, trying all kind of combinations, adjusting the sounds, etc, I think I finally managed to get something quite interesting sonically. The results will not always be qualified as 'musical' for some people, but I think they're quite interesting in term of pure sound design & experimental researches. I'm now glad to say that yes, Alchemy CAN do some amazing morphs... But... It's definitely not a 2 or 3 step task and boom, finished. It takes ALOT of time, patience and experimentation.

Since it's almost impossible to find any audio examples online of morphs between one sound to another, I thought I could share with you guys few of the morphs examples I've been able to achieve:

(It seems for some that the links don't play or download automaticaly, but if you right-click and select "Open in new tab" you should get to the Dropbox page and be able to download them)

A bell into a female choir

An inflating balloon into falling nails

A synth lead into a bouncing rubber ball

A motor turning on into a singing wine glass

A flute into a cello

I hope you find them interesting and maybe they'll give you inspiration to create some cool morphs in Alchemy! :D

Hmmm it seems the links don't work, are they? Let me know if they are or not.

If not, I'll re-upload them tonight somewhere else. Any recommended site to quickly upload audio and have links?

The links are working OK for me ...

These are great examples. As you say, it is not a trivial task and requires time + practice to get the best results, but it can work really well as you've illustrated here. Typically this works best with single notes that have a distinct pitch, but interesting results can come from more complex sounds.

Hopefully other people are listening! :)

Peace,
Andy.

No working here anyway, tried both with Explorer and Firefox.
When you present morphing, it's most informative if you play/show first every pre-morphed sound separately, then the result(s) or morphing. If your demonstrate some tool, e.g. Alchemy, pls. give also as much information as possible about the app setup, parameters etc. H.

Oh great! I was not sure if they were working (they're not for me here, but I'm not home). Thanks for letting me know.

Yup, I'm really having fun with the morphs. It's a tool I always barely scratched the surface, and was thinking it was not sounding good because I was not getting good results after 5 minutes. Hopefully those examples will show people that Alchemy really can do amazing morphs. It just takes time and practice :)

@Andy, seems to not work for everybody :(

Can you get the files and upload them for me to they play here? That would be much appreciated so everyone (and Alchemy) can benefit from them! :)

Hmm, not sure. Maybe try Mediafire:

http://www.mediafire.com/

You would need to sign up, but it is free.

Peace,
Andy.

Using Firefox, it doesn't play or download for me if I just click on the link. However if I right-click and select "Open link in new tab" then I get the Dropbox page and I can download the file from there.

Thanks a lot for the examples

If you can implement the demo in the way the user don't have download files to his computer, just listen the files, that would be great. Everyone of us try to use our hardiscs as economically as possible, even small files when you have really many of those during years, can be a nuisance. H.

Neon,
You left some marks in the Effects corner and at Little Endian.
Now some or many people are wet for morphs. :hyper:
I see, you found your way in Alchemy.

Would you mind sharing more words about your workflow?
And sharing one of your impressive presets wouldn't hurt. :D

Hehehe indeed, for me the last few weeks have been the quest for morph. Alchemy definitly can deliver quality morphs. I can't believe there's no audio examples anywhere though. Not even on Camel Audio's website. Having good ones around would definitly help Alchemy and disclaim the reputation it can't do quality sound morphs.

Sure! Will be a pleasure to share my general workflow and share a preset (will share one that uses factory samples). Give me few hours and as soon as I have some free time tonight, I'll describe in steps the workflow I use for morphing.

Impressive - I'd also like to know your tips on how to do this.

Thanks for sharing these...

My favorite is the motor and the wine glass. Seems that you have to weight the dice with samples that already have something in common sonically.
