Post

Around 19 months ago i had published a free 128 presets soundset for NI Monark based on the Minimoog patchbook by Klaus P. Rausch (from which i had teh official permission for this).

As at some people some people were trying to troll me i was so angry that i had deleted the thread.
I had a copy of the important texts in the thread as a text file so i decided to re-start the thread including the links.

This thread also includes some hints like e.g. using NI Monark polyphonic or adding aftertouch modulation.

I just used the download link and installed the patches in my own Monark again. Seems to work fine here.

Not i will continue with the old texts (see the next 6 posts). Not sure if all links are working but i'll try to check those ASAP. I already re-uploaded the missing audio demo files.

Hi everyone,

i am finished with reprogramming lots of patches for NI Monark that are based on patch books for the Minimoog Model D.

Those are contained in a full bank of 128 patches which also includes some variations.

I tried to keep the parameters as close as possible to those in the patch sheets. In some cases i did bigger changes and those patches got a "+" at the end of the name (before my signature which is "IW")

Here is the download for the 128 Monark patches (updated 8.4.2013):
https://www.dropbox.com/s/diksxut5z1msk ... s.zip?dl=1

This includes a folder with the Reaktor Preset files (*.nrkt) and one folder with the snapshot bank. The Preset files were re-saved using the original Monark ensemble so they should be usable without problems.

Those patches are for personal use but redistribution and creating samples of them are not allowed.

A screenshot with all patch names:

Here is a screenshot of the Monark page B settings i am currently using:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/53230726/IW_Mo ... gs%201.png

About the sources of the used patch sheets/patch books:

1.) The first patch book i used (the majority of the re-programmed patches) was originally created by Klaus P. Rausch from Back In Time Records:

links: http://www.backintimerecords.de/bitr045.htm

http://www.backintimerecords.de/bitr008.htm

I have purchased a copy of those patch charts. My re-programmed patches are published with kind permission of Klaus P. Rausch. Many thansk for this.

I found that Back In Time Records also got a forum here at KVR:
http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=67

(Note: Shortly after havng published those patches back in April 2013 i had met Klaus at the Musikmesse in Frankfurt)

2.) The other patch book (the minority of the patches taht were re-programmed) was first created by Tom Rhea ( who also created the Minimoog manual it seems) and later re-published by Oldschool-Sound.com:

http://egrefin.free.fr/images/Minimoog/ ... Sounds.pdf
http://www.synthzone.com/midi/moog/mini ... 20BOOK.pdf

Some patches contain variations of the original patch book patches or were even modified to my liking (e.g. the "Trumpet" patch).

Here is some help about how to install/use the preset files or the snapshot bank:

Users / mycomputername/ Documents /Native Instruments/ Reaktor5 /Library /Presets

But reaktor doesn't "see" it !

Hi,

the Preset system in Reaktor indeed seems to be a bit complicated. Even if i am no real Reaktor expert i'll try to explain what i found so far. I also created some screenshots for that.

1.) On my system (Windows 7 32-bit) the user files could be found at:

.../Users/mycomputername/Documents/Native Instruments/Reaktor5/Library

This includes folder for Presets, snapshots etc.

2.) The Reaktor preset files from the zip file i provided could be copied into the "Presets" folder (or a new folder if you like).
At the "Player" tab the "Monark.ens" ensemble file should be opened to start Monark.

3.) If you click on the "User" tab and then the "Presets" folder a list of the Preset files should appear:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/53230726/Monar ... er%201.png

By double-clicking on a presets file the preset should be opened.

You could also load and save single Preset files from the file menu.

4.) I usually use a modified version of the page B which seems to be saved with the Preset file. The page B looks this way:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/53230726/Monar ... er%202.png

5.) To be as compatible as possible i re-saved the Preset files using the "original" Monark ensemble. For that i creted a second folder called "Rekator Player Presets" (i could also have used a different name):
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/53230726/Monar ... er%203.png

In those the page B looks like this:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/53230726/Monar ... er%204.png

6.) In some cases you get a message like this:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/53230726/Monar ... er%205.png

This means you should save a copy of the ensemble (usually in the "Ensemeble" sub-folder of the user folder.
This only works with the full Reaktor version.

In that new ensemble file usually all changes to the ensemble (including additional modules etc.), and all also patches are saved.

7.) In the full Reaktor you could also load a snapshot bank (included in a folder with the zip file i provided here).
Usually you have to create a new bank first:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/53230726/Monar ... er%207.png

If not you usually will overwrite an existing bank (an error message like that in 6.) should appear). Here is a screenshot with the file menu for the snapshots (in the snaphot tab):
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/53230726/Monar ... er%206.png

In those snapshot usually changes to the page B of Monark are not saved.
The best way to save all changes seems to be to save a copy of the ensemble (works only in the full version).

8.) If you selected the new snapshot bank you could the load the bank (e.g. the one i provided here):
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/53230726/Monar ... er%208.png

In a snapshot bank a single-click is enough to load a new preset.

I hope those informations help a bit.

UPDATE (29.11.2014):
I added a more detailed description about installing the snapshots bank at the end of this page.

Audio demos:

Here are audio demos from some of the patches i reprogrammed from the patch books.
Those are a single instance and no external FXs were used. Just the raw sound of Monark.
In many demos the Modwheel (for Osc and/or Filter modulation) and/or the Pitchwheel were used.

Monark - 3 Octave Saw
Monark - 3 Osc Octave Bass
Monark - 3-Tuned Leadsynth
Monark - Aggressor Lead
Monark - Bass Drum
Monark - Bells
Monark - Bowed Bass Violin
Monark - Brassey Wha Attack Ld
Monark - Cello
Monark - Clarinet
Monark - Classic Fat Moog Lead
Monark - Colliwogs
Monark - Detuned Square+Saw
Monark - Dirty Guitarish Lead
Monark - Dirty Lead
Monark - Disso Lead
Monark - Electric Bass Guitar
Monark - ELP Aquatarkus
Monark - ELP Trilogy
Monark - Fat Bass ELP
Monark - Fat Sweep Reso Bass
Monark - Fat Swirl Bass
Monark - Fattest Squares

In this example the Modwheel is used to add vibrato and Tremolo:
Monark - Bassoon

In this one the Modwheel adds Filter modulation (at audio rate) which results in a kind of repeater or echo effect (second part of the demo):
Monark - Brain Salad Surgery

In this one the Arpeggiator of Ableton Live 9 was used and the Modwheel was used to adjust the amount of Filter modulation (audio rate):
Monark - 4-Position Synthbass 1

---------------------------------------------

longer Audio demos with multiple instances:

1.) Monark - Horny Viola Part I (+FXs)

Those are 4 instances of Monark, 3 are used for the chords.

Patches used: "Viola IW", "Horn IW"

Effects used:
Pitch MIDI effect from Ableton Live 9, Valhalla DSP ValhallaVintageVerb, Arts Acoustic Big Stone Phase shifter, ERS Dimension D Chorus.

-----------------------------------------------
Doing polyphonic sounds with Monark:

This is an updated procedure of how to make a polyphonic version of Monark (many thanks to KVR member fluxmind for finding this out and posting it):

1. Enable editing mode, Go to "Panel/Monark/Monark", disconnect from "Volt" cell PK, GT
2. Create "Note Pitch" and "Gate" and connect "Note Pitch" to PK and Gate to GT
3. Go into the "Function" tab of the "Gate" module (right-click and "Properties") and set "Upper Limit (MIDI) to 1 (instead of 127).
4. Still at the same place disconnect "Volt" cell from "Out 1", create "Out Port" and "Audio Voice Combiner" and Connect "Audio Voice Combiner" output to Out 1 and Out 2 and then Connect "Volt" cell output to Audio Voice Combiner input
5. Now go to "Panel/Monark" disconnect Out 2 and connect that Out 2 to Second free Out
6. Go back to "Panel/Monark/Monark" and disable "Mono" in "Volt" cells properties
7. Go to back to "panel" click on Monark name and in Properties page enable as many voices as you want (or how many your CPU could handle...)
8. Go to file and save ensemble as Monark Poly, because I don't now how to make a switch for mono/poly yet, so you will have 2 versions, one normal monophonic and one Polyphonic
A few features like e.g. page B settings don't seem to be available now.

Here are two screenshots showing the modifications:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/532 ... rk%201.png
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/532 ... rk%202.png

Based on that using two of my Monark patches I just created an audio demo using one instance of the poly modification and one instance with a Lead sound:

Monark - Horny Viola Part II (+FXs)

FXs used: ValhallaDSP ValhallaVintageVerb, ERS Dimension D Chorus
patches used: "Viola IW" (slightly modified for polyphonic use), "Horn IW"

More demos will follow.

Here is an older demo (already published here) where i use 3 instances of Monark to create "one finger" chords (same patches used):

Monark - Horny Viola Part I (+FXs)

additionally to the FXs of the other demo the Arts Acoustic Big Stone Phase Shifter and the Pitch MIDI effect from Ableton Live were used in this.

I'll try to do some modified patches of those i published here for use with the polyhonic Monark.

-------------------------------------------
UPDATE:

I just found a way to use both the Modwheel and Aftertouch for the modulation amount.

Here is a screenshot of the modification:
Image

procedure:
1.) Open Monark -> Monark and then open the big module at the left side (no name). You should be able to identify that part from the screenshot then.
in the screenshot i marked all important parts red.

2.) add an Ch. Aftertouch module (from Built-in module -> MIDI-IN)

3.) add a "Merge" module (from Built-in module -> Event Processing)

4.) Open the "Properties" page of the Merge module (with the right-click menu) and change "min. Num Ports" to 2 to get two inputs.

5.) connect the "Modwheel" module to one input of the Merge module and the aftertouch module to the other input. Then connect the output of the Merge module to the "MW" module (like shown in the screenshot)

Now you should be able to use both the MW or Aftertouch for the modulation amount.
Instead of the "Merge" module you could also try "Math" operators like eg "Multiply". in that case you could use Aftertouch for modulation and use the MW for adjusting the maximum modulation amount.

You're welcome. :)

It's not all found by myself like e.g. the poly modification. I just added the additions and corrections that were made later by fluxmind into his original step by step procedure.
Opposing to his first opinion i think this could be really useful but not for all sounds. Also in other synths not all sounds that were designed for mono use are usuable for polyphonic sounds. This also includes any Bass sounds.

About aftertouch i guess someone mentioned a basic idea somewhere but i found a procedure how it really seems to work. Of course adding aftertouch could be also used with the monophonic ensemble and even seems to make more sense there (e.g. for adding vibrato).
I will also try to add a knob for adjusting the aftertouch mod amount and maybe the same for the MW too.

With purchasing Monark i more or less started doing a little "programming" (or just a little tweaking...) with Reaktor. I hope i could add afew more modifications like e.g. adding a step sequencer. I also have external step sequencer plugins but it would be fun to have it included.

UPDATE:
I just added a fader to control the maximum aftertouch amount (this involves using a multiplier module ; the multiplier has to be set to "Mono"):

Image

UPDATE:
One problem with this modification is that the Modwheel amount does not seem to be saved with the snapshot. When reloading the patch the Mod amount is 0.
This problem does not appear when using the older version of the modification without the slider so the problem could be based on the Multiplier module.

UPDATE:
Looks like i solved the problem using a more complex modification that include a Seperator module and a Multiply/Add module:

Image

This way both the Modwheel setting could be saved and you could also use the Modwheel and Aftertouch at the same time to add more modulation if necessary.
I'll try to create a Macro from this to make it easier to use.

He told he got Monark now, played with my patches and found the same as i did: This and the real thing do sound almost identical.

He also allowed that i could post a few A/B comparisons of Monark and the audio files he provided on a CD with his patch book. I'l do that ASAP but most of the weekend i'll not be at home.
I have created four A/B comparisons (first Monark, then Minimoog) using the audio files Klaus P. Rausch created with his Minimoog and the related Monark patches where i tried to use the same parameter values (raw synth sounds, no FXs added):

Monark + Minimoog - 3 Osc Octave Bass

Monark + Minimoog - Brain Salad Surgery

Monark + Minimoog - Fattest Squares

Monark + Minimoog - Long Filter Sweep Lead

The last example uses the maximum amount of Resonance in both cases.

Those sounds match close enough for my personal taste and the small differences should not be bigger than those between two Minimoogs. With slight optimization of the parameters they could be maybe matched even further.

Many thanks to Klaus P. Rausch for the kind permission to post those A/B comparisons and kudos for his great work on doing those patches.

The audio files of the Minimoog are included with an Audio CD that is provided with the printed patch book.

The Monark patches which i published in the bank could sound slightly different as i added small modifications that are also mentioned in the patch book (e.g. detuning of the oscillators).

I was just playing with the patch "Horn IW". The original patch is maybe a bit too "smooth" sounding. A good value for a "harder" one seems top be changing the Cutoff to around the middle position.

Thank you for the Presets Ingonator.

I'll have to read the thread properly (later on) to understand how to use them. I find Reaktor to be largely non intuitive. :?

Hi,

just had a look at the description for the installation. It's indeed not really simple.

I am currently preparing screenshots for a new description based on the snapshot bank file (that way only works with the full version of Reaktor).

I just created a new description for loading the patches:

Installing the patches in Reaktor 5 using the snapshot bank file

1.) On my system (Windows 7 64-bit) the user files could be found at:

C:/Users/(yourname)/Documents/Native Instruments/Reaktor5/Library

This includes folder for Presets, snapshots etc.

2.) Open the Monark Ensemble (from the "Player" tab in Reaktor 5)

3.) Switch to the Snapshot tab and switch on the symbol at the right of the file drop-down menu.

Here is a screenshot where the snapshot tab and that button are marked with red color:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/532 ... ank_03.png
Image

4.) Click at the "Edit" button to open a drop-down menu. Select "New Bank".

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/532 ... ank_04.png
Image

5.) From the same drop-down menu now select "Load Bank"

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/532 ... ank_05.png
Image

A file dialog opens. In this example i am loading the snapshot bank file from the "Snapshots" folder in the Reaktopr library:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/532 ... ank_06.png
Image

In this case the folder is at:
C:/Users/(yourname)/Documents/Native Instruments/Reaktor5/Library/Snapshots

6.) Open the snapshot bank by double-clicking on the file or clicking on the file and using "Open" in the dialog.

The bank should be loaded now. Clicking at a patch in the list at the left should load it.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/532 ... ank_07.png
Image

The name of the loaded patch also appears at the display at the top of the GUI now (see screnshot).

7.) Save a copy of the ensemble file (usually in the "Ensemble" sub-folder of the user folder.
This only works with the full Reaktor version.
In that new ensemble file usually all changes to the ensemble (including additional modules etc.), and all also patches are saved.

Here is a screenshot with the file menu entry:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/532 ... ank_01.png
Image

The file dialog should look like this (the folder location is shown at the top):
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/532 ... ank_02.png
Image

Either save the Monark ensemble with the original name or give it a new one maybe like
"Monark_patch book 1.ens" or something like that.

8.) Next time you start Monark you could load the Monark from the file in the "user" tab.
After double-clicking the saved ensemble file it should look like this (with the last used preset while saving opened):
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/532 ... ank_08.png
Image

9.) After swtching to the Snapshots tab agaian it looks like this:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/532 ... ank_09.png

Not more different than one Minimoog from the other. Really hard to get it closer than with Monark.
Also the parameter ranges are close to being 1:1 and in several cases i did not even do changes to the original values.

Klaus P. Rausch when i met him at the Musikmesse 2012 told me that most patches do sound similar to those at his own Minimoog.
