Hi Forrest,

thank you for your hard work on the Jazz rules, and the phrases! :tu:

Installation notes:
- copy the "Jazz Phrases 1" folder into your Custom Phrases folder. If RapidComposer is running, you can press the 'reload' button at the top of the Phrase Browser to load the newly added phrases.
- copy "Jazz Major Scale Rules.rcCPRL" into C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\RapidComposer\DB (Windows) or into ~/Documents/RapidComposerV2/DB (Mac OS X). The rules can be used next time you start RapidComposer.

Feel free to try and comment on these chord rules. I think these are extremely cool!

Thank you!

That's an little excellent video, learned quite a lot about the use of RC watching it, the shortcut showing the phrases in the browser before dragging them over is another superb little feature, thank you!

Thank you, Forrest! The 3rd video explains chord rules, and chord progression generating and editing master track chords really well, so it is a mandatory video for all new users.
It is always amazing for me to watch someone using the program, I learn a lot from it.

It is a personal preference, but I find it quicker to add phrases by double-clicking on the background instead of drag-and-dropping from the browser. Before double-clicking you need to highlight the phrase to be added in the browser.

Thank you! :tu:

Hi Attila,

Thank you! And, thanks for your insight about adding phrases by double-clicking on the background. It's wonderful to learn new workflow tips! :)

Here is the 5th and final installment for this series. I plan to turn my attention to using RC for Blues, next.

Hi Attila,

I'm working on Chord Rules for Jazz Minor/Blues and noticed that RC is not recognizing V7alt or V7b9b13

Is this written a different way in RC?

Or, if it is not available, would it be possible for you to add it?

Thanks,
Forrest

Hi Forrest,

Yes, these chords are missing. Isn't 7alt the same as 7#5#9 (7+5+9 is also recognized)? If so, I'll add 'alt' to the aliases.

You can add new chords if needed:
1) right click on any chord in the browser
2) click on New Chord at the bottom
3) fill the name, press Enter
4) fill the aliases (alternative short names to recognize), press Enter
5) select the notes on the keyboard that belong to the chord

Like this:

The only problem is that without having a chord in the chord library (e.g. for another user using your rules), the 'unknown' chord will be replaced with another chord if it is not found. This has to be tested, because I am not sure what exactly happens.
It is a problem because only the chord name is stored in the rules, not the whole chord definition. This works differently from composition files, where you can load any composition even if that uses new chords, that are not found in your library.

Thank you for your contributions! :tu:

Hi Attila,

Thank you, you’ve taught me something new with RC and challenged me to think through the ALT chord a bit further.

Reflecting on this, it seems the ALT chord could take many forms depending on how the performer wishes to alter the notes to create tension. I tend to think on this as 7b9 or 7b9b13, but it could include any variation of b9, #9, #11 or b13.

So, adding ‘alt’ as an alias may not be the right thing to do.

Here are the variation possible (as far as I can tell):
7b13
7b9
7#9
7b9b13
7#9b13
7#11

From this list, these are the chords that do not seem to be in RC:
7b13
7b9b13
7#9b13

Would it be possible for you to add these in RC so that are available universally? Just concerned that this may not work as expected for other people if I only create these chords locally.

I’ve also attached a first draft at a Jazz Minor Scale Rule set, including the V7b9b13 chord, so you can test the effect if this chord is missing.
