Hey - just a quick FYI - I put up a new Flash-based home page (actually designed with a Swish2 template) and included a new mix of a montage inspired by my wife's screenplay "Descendent" to go with it. I remixed everything in surround and downmixed using the SRS Circle Surround encoder.

The mp3 that plays from the "montage" link on the main page is a shortened version of the original tune, with some instuments added - Scarbee J-Fingered bass piped through iZotope Trash to parallel the guitar part in the middle of the piece. I also added a synth part from Arturia's minimoogV. The last section includes the addition of a high pad from Steinberg's new "Enhancer" piped into the surround to complement the orchestral string sections (from Garritan Personal Orchestra) in the front.

I guess the annoying little thing here is that it opens new windows when clicking around.

The spawning of the new window for the Flash presentation is part of the template. The there are only two other links that cause a separate browser window, and that goes to the Screenblast and Broadjam sites. Sorry if that's a bone in your throat. I'm not really sure how else to do it, as I don't want the main Flash window to be taken over without the ability to navigate back to it.

Thanks for the positive comments on the music. Virtual Guitarist's acoustic through iZotope Spectron is a mad-pretty combination. Everyone seems to love it. The stereo downmix is not as nice as the surround (and of course the original full bandwidth mix has much more channel separation than the SRS encoded version), but that's to be expected. I'm really surprised that the stereo mix held up so well in a 96kbps/44.1kHz mp3.

Oh dear...the dreaded Flash "splash" window...

I took a quick look at the code, and see no sniffer code - that means that if you don't have Flash installed, you are bone out of luck.

If search engine visibility is an issue for you (not to mention usability) you may want to consider having actual content on your homepage, which means a site that is XHTML/CSS compliant with some judicious use of Flash.

Very nice piece of music as "montage," though. I like the scope and range it suggests.

But why in the world do you want to hide it?!

Better by far to put it under the music link.

You may want to seriously reconsider providing a link to a page that requires a password to listen to music.

Prospective customers are going to have to REALLY want to hear it to go throught the extra steps of requesting a password.

If the goal is to make money, this is a bad idea.

Actually - there is a link on the index page, but I plan to put a sniffer there. This is V1 of the site. I'll also add m3u file links so that folks can pick playlists directly on the "music" page, but I ran out of time before the work week started.

The locked project files contain spec cues where I composed music under scenes from "known" films. Making it generally available might be construed as "publishing" an altered version of those scenes and might be considered running afoul of the DMCA and other copyright provisions. Putting them behind passwords means that they still remain "private" and unpublished. This was on the advice of my attorney - out of an abundance of caution.

The mp3 versions will go in the Music panel of the main Flash site after I get a chance to work out the pre-load and perhaps insert some progress bars for each one so that folks know they're waiting for a file to load instead of clicking on a link and not hearing anything for a while.

Thanks for both comments - I took you criticism as purely constructive. BTW, what do you think about having the email link on the contact page? How succeptable is it to SPAM spiders compared to flat HTML?

We do that here at the college (actually, as part of our footer as well). We look at is as the price of doing business.

YOu want to make it dead-easy for people to contact you, so I would suggest you add contact info as part of your footer on every page, and use a SPAM filter to deal with the "forces of evil."

Changed the mix to push the bass forward (perhaps too far forward) and will continue tweaking through the evening.
