Mediaplayer for Windows that use ASIO?

I found that running normal Windows mediaplayer sound much worse than my separate dvd/cd-player connected digitally to the same DAC. Some harsch components in upper mids or highs.
I'm not sure what happends, it seems my settings for only audio device, my RME HDSP 9632 run at 48k. I assume some resampling occur, at very poor quality.
I find some audio settings, that I assume are from HD Audio stuff from NVIDIA graphics card for the hdmi out, it using audio there. Settings to choose are something like Studio which says in advanced settings to be 24bit/48k. And one can choose 16b/48k too. There are some choices for DTS or Dolby stereo etc and also some WDM or something that is not checked by default.
I don't know what this crap is - I just want to be able to play a mixdown in how it will sound on a cd player 16/44.
There must be a media player that can play ASIO directly - and possibly without any resampling involved?
And maybe I have to set soundcard to 44k to really sound as a cd when I do that.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

foobar can do ASIO and WASAPI exclusive. it should switch samplerate to 44100 for your soundcard in both modes.
Edit:

Dunno if it still works but there's a plugin for WMP that makes it use ASIO drivers...

Foobar The ASIO output module must be downloaded it's not included in the default installation.

Anyway, I don't think there is a difference in the sound and remember that you can only run one ASIO application at the same time.

Thanks for input - everybody, really good.
Foobar, what a nice app - and good ripping stuff and settings you feel you are in control. Thinking ReplayGain etc. I had a set of CD I made that were like 6dB lower from another software than original CD - that was a mystery - maybe got an explanation now then.
And plugins for asio - thanks for tip, I would have missed that one - 4damind.
What I liked about it is that is actually resets samplerate as a daw is doing. I run daw at 48k and reference music and mixdowns I will run original 44k - so don't have to think about doing this manually.
Computer is actually sounding a bit better than DVD/cd player now - believe it or not.
I tiny bit on esses on a recording I tested now - Sia album, 1000 something. It's rather hard processing on vocals on some songs and extra distortion can be heard. I tested through during maybe 30 minutes - one unit 1s or so behind the other so I can hear the exact same frase shifting from coax to optical. It might be that RME card has more even clock - don't know. It's not as much as you immediately want to put a deesser on it, but a tiny bit sharper sounding from DVD/CD-player.
First without the ASIO module there were some outs that are exposed that are also refererred to in Windows. Installing ASIO you see a couple of DirectSound modules beside RME own stuff too. My guess is that Windows use these DirectSound by default. And DS does not change setting in RME - so I think some resampling occurs running WMP - DS is one level from what RME drivers do.
Installed the cd writer component too, and will see how that goes. I mean Windows default stuff in WMP is really crooked and won't let you make your own cd's properly without degrading sound. I remember trying to put together the songs I liked from a cd - that was ok. Then I started from that cd and added stuff for a second cd - it became all garbled and crazy sounding. And nothing I did from Windows 7 worked in my car. I had to do CDBurnerXP on my xp computer to do that.
I have to check if there is a donate link to that Peter and Foobar - really good job.

You can also check ASIO Bridge:
vb-audio.pagesperso-orange.fr/Cable/index.htm
Weird GUI, Strange Website, but a very cool tool that allows you to integrate your ASIO gear directly into the Windows Sound system. I use it with a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 and can finally use surround sound from DVDs and BluRays directly with the Interface.
The good thing is, that it works with ANY player.
Cheers,
Tom

I'm using JRiver Media Center now for well over a decade, and imo it's still the best audio player out there.
It has a ton of audio related features, but is also great for organizing a large music collection, which I have.
It is even able to sync my iPod, so I don't have to install the iTunes crap
Furthermore, it can host VST-Plugins
No, it's not freeware, but imo worth every penny:

Here is a good review (of a former version):

It can playback also a ton of different video files, but I use it for audio only.
