I'd say this creates a HUGE disincentive to use software that relies on Java... Bitwig devs - is there a future for us users that doesn't require us to install adware?

Post

It doesn't require you to install adware, it checks the box for you in the installer so that it will install if you're not paying attention. Same as it's always been on Windows I think. If you install it by accident you can remove it anyway.

Dude, get your facts straight. Bitwig comes with it's own JRE. If you don't believe me look in BitwigStudio/jre.

Right now my Bitwig is running Java 8, I don't even have Java 8 installed on my computer. :)

One of the best code IDE's in the world is made with Java, Intellij and all it's derivatives(WebStorm, PyCharm, etc). Probably more than half the internet is made from a Java source. :)

Java in the hands of fools makes Java look like a fool.

I wrote the API history generator(Bitwig API docs) and controller API javascript stubs generator that Bitwig uses in there build with Java!!! hahah

If Java is GPL then can't someone else make an adware free distribution?

Post

What about this?

http://openjdk.java.net

Is this a viable replacement for the official Java runtime?

Post

Why do you need a replacement?

Post

People might prefer a more trustworthy source.

A notion of a Java runtime with adware is ridculous. The runtime (JRE/JDK) does not even have a user interface to deliver ads to. The adware is part of the Java installer - not part of the JRE. Many apps bundle adware and other junk software in their installers to offset the cost of the download. Whether you run the official commercial version, or the GPL'd openjdk version, this software is free for you (and the developers of other packages) to use. Just uncheck the option to install the crap that comes with the installer.

I just installed the latest Java from their website and I failed to notice a checkbox that I didn't untick.

Several minutes after Java had installed, a medium sized Panda burst into my room wearing a Gimp suit. I won't go into detail but suffice to say, roast chickens were NEVER meant to go "in there"..

From now on, I'll be reading what I'm doing before spamming the "Next" button on installers.

If you have the need to install Java, why don't you just use NInite? I've been using it for years and it takes care of the junk when installing the apps :tu:

Actually adwcleaner seems to be one of the legit ones like Malwarebytes - however there are fake versions of it knocking about so be sure to get it from the original developers:

I wondered if it was spam too but a Google doesn't find any pattern of people spamming this product, and when I checked I found that it seems a reputable freeware product, not the sort to use spamming. Also to be fair the post doesn't even have a direct link to the product. I think it's probably just either a lurker or driveby who thought he had something useful to share so signed up to post it, although there's also a chance that he's the one who wrote that blog post.

What I don't get is how he managed to post a live link in a first post - KvR forum software is supposed to autoblock these things but it's not the first time I've seen this happen.

I see this :
AUTO-ADMIN: Non-MP3, WAV, OGG, SoundCloud, YouTube, Vimeo, Twitter and Facebook links in this post have been protected automatically. Once the member reaches 5 posts the links will function as normal.
Perhaps there's an option to disable that feature in your preferences for the forum?
