a bit offtopic since this specifically does not relate to VST -

what are your cult freeware programs for audio and MIDI?

nb: desirable properties scoring a 'cult value' star would be
things such as: (free)/'no install' is a high scorer/ retro
programs that run on any version of windows/ etc.

not least unique and essential programs, that work, and that
no-one has thought to update/steal/etc. (can even have essential
utility tools for anything useful to the creative)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
'Amen' - gets first mention, as a brilliant, easy, unobtrusive, essential
chopper-upper+reassembler of breakbeats. no need to install it, unzip
and run from the folder. still working.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
mentions for:
-MIDIOx - MIDI utility/xfer tool
-maple midi cable - 4x MIDI buss on pc
-ASIO4ALL - universal asio driver
-VieNa - sf2 editor/player
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Analog Box 2.42

https://sites.google.com/site/analogbox2/download

Does not require an installer, and is less than a megabyte in size. Also can run on many older verisons of Windows. This is actually my primary environment for composition/sound design - everything from synthesis to sample manipulation. *Please forgive the following self-promotion.

All of the tracks here:

as well as the video here:

were made entirely with this software (i.e. no VST's). It can host VST's, but does not handle them very well. Usually the older ones work the best.

It's been made open-source as well!

How about SynC Modular?

I gather a lot of it's tech is still in Reaktor and still a lot of great sounding ensembles around the web.

@feralsystems: I forgot all about Analog Box, need to rectify that now, created loads of great sounds with it back in the day. :)

Really great work :) I've long been a fan of this software - would love to have the time to really get into it. Good to hear other folks work as I've hardly ever come across anyone who uses it.
