I obtained a PhD in Organic Chemistry at the University of Illinois U-C, but spent half of my time at Washington University-St. Louis, because that's where the cyclotron was. Dr. Welch was my professor on the Wash U end. He passed away recently. The title is from the brass shield on the coffin of John Torrington, a member of the ill-fated Franklin Northwest Passage Exploration of 1845.

We were explorers all.
