Will that be enough? (Hardware upgrades are out of the question since we just bought the iMac a couple months ago.) I know Dr. Wackler or putte could answer that one, but I can't. DHR53 wrote: What exactly do you mean by hardware? I have a 1.25ghz G4, with a gig of ram, and I can barely get 4-5 AUs going with FX... That would be CPU around 50-75%... Maybe you know some magic I don't?
Hardware? Roland, Korg, Yamaha, A Virus, take your pick. Outboard gear. You wanna bounce down, you have to record out an individual take. That's "freezing" your track. 4-5 au's with effects? Not bad at all. If you run out, then you bounce down. Ya, not exactly ellegant, but it gets the job done. What you think people have done for years before automation, automatic patch and song recall, multiple instances, etc etc etc? Devon ---- Simple music philosophy - Those who can, make music. Hi
Bloody hell - talk about getting on a lazy mans back with sloppy studio techniques - next thing you know he'll be telling people that some of the biggest selling albums of all time were recorded on a 4track! But I agree Lee'Scratch'Perry did record a few dities on his TEAC. Flipper. |

Dten, I'm just being honest with you... That's what I have, and the performance I get, to me is pretty limiting... But it all depends on what you want to do with the software? Not everyone is going to be layering on 32 tracks of audio and instruments! That's why I use Reason, frankly... I can do what I need to do, without hitting the wall of my cpu... Although it's not as capable as Logic... I've had a lot of problems with Logic (cpu wise) on my machine, but my G4 is considered the bottom of the line these days... But you can't just expect to load up Pro on a base Mac and start piling on those great instruments and plugs... you will be disappointed... IMHO! |

Just to chime in
Get it. Spend the cash. It's more than worth it for $500 (VERY more than worth it I ran logic with a ton of plugs on a G4 933 for over a year, and yes - there was some bouncing of tracks to audio going on, and once freeze was added I did do that, but under no circumstances did it keep me from finishing 4 albums and two soundtracks last year You'll have a blast with it, and with Live also - it'll be a great pair (I'm a live/logic user) DO IT!!!!! And head on over to OSXaudio.com - there's a whole crew of Logic/OSX/Mac users over there that can help make you feel good about your purchase as you learn the ropes Michael |

No worries, DHR53, I thoroughly and sincerely appreciate your honesty. The only thing worse than not having Logic and wanting it, is having it and it doesn't work (to my satisfaction)! Because I would no more money for anything else. I'd rather not do that...
To me, the point of getting it would be so that I am not limited by lesser software. But performance hadn't even occurred to me and may be the deciding factor for sticking with the cheaper stuff. By the time I can afford a G5, I'll be able to afford Logic at full retail too. |

Another Live / Logic user chiming in. I did all my work on a 800mhz G4 Powerbook up until a few months ago, so yeah a 1.25 ghz imac should be plenty powerful for Logic.
I would bet that you get better plug in and cpu performance out of Logic on OS X than any other DAW out there, and the EXS24mkII is cpu friendly, I could run about 21 instances of it on the 800 before the machine crapped out. This is a cpu test though, and I bet 16 would be practical with FX. |

get tracktion and live. you'll be making music in minutes, instead of learning software. I still have logic pro, but I never use it anymore; for me there is too much clicking, opening and closing windows and other stuff going on that really get in the way once your musical ideas start flowing.
just my opninion, of course. |
