Just a shout-out about a new open-source modular system in the making:

http://www.synthtopia.com/content/2017/08/08/vcv-a-new-open-source-virtual-modular-system-to-debut-at-knobcon/

I should mention that I have nothing to do with that, just thought it might be interesting to follow and discuss.

Cheers,
Martin

This looks interesting. Looking forward to trying it.

It looks like it won't work as plugin in another DAW, but is a standalone version. I hope, as it is announced to be open source, that somebody might take on the task to wrap a VST-plugin layer around it.

[dreaming]
How cool would it SOloRack API would be compatible, and modules could be used in both...
Or even also the Softube ones...
[\dreaming]

In ernest, I guess it would be a great thing if a common standard for modular plugins (i.e. one module) could be defined, with a SDK similar to the VST SDK (less flawed, though...)

Martin

There's another thread here, with a link to the source code

Thanks, I have not spotted that yet.

I can vouch for the quality. It is a ton of fun, and the developer is very friendly. I've not made much noise about it as he has been waiting to show it off. The Synthesis Technology Wave Edit is also made by the same developer. If you like that, you will be just as if not more impressed.

That's a brilliant idea.

Andrew (the developer) walked me through it at Knobcon. Pretty exciting stuff -- virtual modules integrate directly with hardware modules if you have a DC-coupled interface, but there's so much that just comes with it for free that it's pretty fantastic on its own. The upcoming VST bridge and/or Ableton Link are going to make it really shine. It'd be slightly smoother if it just ran as a plugin, but I won't complain.

The modules are, in many cases, running the exact same code as hardware modules (with some analog emulation, convolution reverb etc. where necessary) and it's just... free. That might be the most mind-blowing part. (Some other modules specially developed for it will be paid expansions.)

The web page is life now with download links. Has anybody get it running yet?

I tried on my Mac (OSX 10.10) but it claims that it needs 10.12 (despite the web page saying that it is 10.7+).
I already notified Andrew. Really curious to try this thing on my PC tonight.

Update:

Andrew already fixed that. New downloads should work on Mac OS X 10.7 upwards.
He seems to be very quick and responsive.

I fired it up here (10.12.6) but none of the jacks or dials are showing in the GUI.

I could live without the plugin-link if it had a record button.

The free modules are plenty to get on with. Some pretty fancy ones in there. It'll be interesting to see the price-range for the paid modules, who gets on board with that, and of course how polished it gets for usability for all kind of users. If they're just concentrating on getting the engine right before all that and think they've got it good enough to show off, then fair enough - I agree, it sounds pretty good to me! The general interface seems fairly intuitive and easy, and familiar. Stacked cabling would be a cool feature to add tho ;)

I had a couple of little bugs: After saving and starting a new file, the ins and outs weren't showing properly until I restarted the app; It also crashed when I right&left clicked an input - couldn't reproduce either bug since.

Early days. I'm interested!

Edit: Oh, and I like how it remembered the patch when it crashed, so I hadn't lost anything either time. :tu:
Q. Why is a mouse when it spins?
A. The higher the fewer.

I get nearly 90% CPU on the "Audio Interface" module simply connecting a VCO directly to the Audio Out
is that possible???
