UPDATE 19.11.2017: Track has been updated on 19.11.2017. With the input of some guys in this forum and on another community I got the inspiration to do yet another version. Enjoy the new Version!

Hi guys,

please listen to my track "eins-zwei-drei-vier" which is my Homage to the German Pioneers of electronic music - Kraftwerk.

This Song has been made for the One Synth Challenge [1]. That means that all sound is coming only from Dimitry Schees' great Synth Thorn [2]! But to be exact there's alot of other plugins used mainly to sculpt sound and to create a sick mix which can be listend to very loud without making your ears blead...

Thorn features additive/wavetabe-like Oscillators - now you might say "How can you make it speak". It's possible to prepare samples in a way that you can divide the sample into 16 junks and load these junks into one of Thorns Oscillators. With the help of the right set of programming you can make it to say "eins" (german for "one") for instance.

Great sounds, especially the Vocal FX. I also liked the filter FX on the arped synth. It sounds a lot more energetic that the Kraftwerk I remember, but I'm not complaining.

Good work :)

Sounds great! Kraftwerk goes EBM...

Many thanks seismic1 and deastman for your nice feedback!

My long time heros, Kraftwerk. I love them since my teenage days...and I haven't yet dared to do such a Homage because I was anxious to fail completely. But somehow the synth here took over control and I ended up with these nice simple sounds and all over sudden the Kraftwerk thing took shape.
Therefore your feedback is highly appreciated. It tells me that it's not a complete fail. So thanks again guys!

Hi.

i like your track. Awesome sound design. Especially that synthesized vocal thingy.
Keep up the great work.

Nice old school groove with some great textural moments...all those synth sounds combine very effectively.

But, for me, it's lacking one thing - a killer lead melody floating over the top...either on a synth or vocal.

Hi ChamMusic, nice and helpfull comment, thanks a lot for that.
I was asking myself if you have a couple of reference songs for the killer lead sound in mind?
Would love to listen to what you have in mind and maybe get inspiration from it.

Cheers

Hi Peter,

"a killer lead melody floating over the top...either on a synth or vocal"

Kraftwerk's own 'The Robots':

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXa9tXcMhXQ

Starts with a slowly building texture - loads of electronic sounds work together very effectively to create a great texture...as do your piece.

Then at 42 seconds you get an extra layer - a very clear, short, sharp, catchy hook of a melody that sticks in your head and lifts the music to another level.

Of course, later on you also get those short, catchy vocal lines as well to lift it even further.

I seriously like your piece, but for me at the moment it is like this Kraftwerk piece without the strong memorable hook of the mentioned synth melody and lead vocals. What sound would work for yours...not sure, but I suspect it would be something more sustained and full-bodied than in the Kraftwerk example as you have lots of short, sharp, punchy sounds in there already? maybe something sawtooth wave based?

Another example;
Jean Michel Jarre - Oxygene 2:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD4KMp2 ... oo2lj1NQST

For nearly 2 minutes you get wonderful synth sounds weaving their way around each other as the music ebbs and flows and then at 1 min 48 seconds in comes a strong memorable melody that lifts it all even higher.

Hope that explains what I meant,
Mark

Yes, you're right, Mark...Kraftwerk...I could have guessed that myself ;-)

Many, many Thanks that you spend the time to write the feedback and for the two cool references.
It's allways better to listen to what somebody has in mind. :tu:

If you like please give the new Version a try - Damn, the reference to Robots ... I needed to add the Robot Bass as well as a "melodie". Is this somehow going into the direction you're thinking of?

I have uploaded the new version to the same URL:

I just played this on the HiFi through the Mission speakers. I really liked the bass on here, and the lead synth rounds things off nicely.

Good work :)

Definitely sounds more complete now...catchy lead with nice, short, sharp phrases.

@seismic1 and @ChamMusic

Thanks guys for taking the time to listening to the new Version and leaving a feedback.
I think with your help I made good progress towards a final Version...It's so inspiring to get constructive feedback and it always gives me new ideas / starts a second creativity boost.

By the way - Our conversation made me listen to your tracks. Some great stuff and inspiration there! Keep up your great work, you have a new fan :tu:

Peter,
Thank you for the review! Now your song: Since I took 2 1/2 years of German, I could translate the song title (ha ha). I like the intro and other vocals. The synths and drums sound rather good. I wouldn't mind hearing some good singing vocals on this. I like it. Since you are from Germany, say hi to Kraftwerk for me. ;)
