I think my wife is cheating on me. I am a working musician and, as you would expect, travel a lot. I have been noticing strange things happening when I get home. Her mobile phone rings and she steps outside to answer it or she says, "I'll call you back later". When I ask her who called she gets evasive.
Sometimes she goes out with friends but comes home late, getting dropped off around the corner and walking the rest of the way. I once picked up the extension while she was on the phone and she got very angry. A buddy of mine plays guitar in a band. He told me that my wife and some guy have been to his gigs. He wanted to borrow my guitar amp. That's when I got the idea to find out for myself what was really happening. I said "Sure, you can use my amp but I want to hide behind it at the gig and see if she comes into the venue and who she comes in with". He agreed. Saturday night came and I slipped behind my vintage Marshall JMP MKII 50W half stack to get a good view. I could feel the heat coming off the back of the amp. It was at that moment, crouching down behind the amp, that I noticed that one of the tubes was not glowing as bright as the other 3. Is this something I can fix myself or do I need to take it to a technician? Thanks Very Concerned ---- At school they taught me how to be. So pure in thought and word and deed. They didn't quite succeed. |

You probably need to make up your mind about what kind of tube you want, and you should AT LEAST replace them in matched pairs, if not a complete matched quad. Prices vary, and there's absolutely no consensus about how good the cheaper eastern european ones are, for instance. Some say they sound great but are short lived, others... you get the picture. I suppose you could pick a web guru and stick with his advice, but I'm pretty sure you'll be told to replace them by pairs.
You can do it yourself if you don't have complete electrophobia, just don't touch the glass, as the grease off your fingers cause hot spots on the tube and could cause them to blow up. Properly. With a bang. So grab by base, replace by pairs (or all fours) and shop around for the best deals on tubes. And why not ask the new boyfriend to help you? That could conjure up some deliciously awkward moments... |

Most people these days don't know much about tubes. Have "him" help you remove the dim tube. With the power on. With just his fingers. Then you'll have his fingerprints. Not a copy, the originals. |

The ideal conclusion to all of this would be that your wife is cheating on you with someone who knows a lot about tube amps. That way you could get some free work on your tube amp and it would soften the blow of her cheating on you.
Everyone's happy! |
