X-Wheel of Fortune

X-Wheel of Fortune 6 (X-WoF 6) is a versatile multi-part music system with inbuilt cell step control sequencer for creating tracks of various types of music like Ambient or even soundtracks. Just set up certain basics and let the machine create variations for you as there are several inbuilt algorithms just for this purpose giving this machine it's magic touch.

X-WoF 6 features a great variety of 262 inbuilt scales (Pentatonic, Hexatonic and Heptatonic) using harmonical scale steps for fairly easy composition or arrangement of tracks and even learn more about harmony in music. Additionally you might assign a dedicated - even experimental - User scale for each patch.

There are 10 inbuilt sound engines: two synthesizers for Pad parts, one for Bass, one for HiSq (high sequences), one for Athmo-loops (e.g. rain, waterflow, sonar, etc.) and OneShot sounds plus 5 percussion instruments. For overall interactive realtime control there are two XY SuperModulation pads plus one XY Master Control pad with the option to control the other two. Thus you have up to 28 different modulation destinations under the control of just one knob even with different polarities i.e. directions.

This is a complete new X-WoF with the major aim from the start to have everything built around the new cell step control sequencer which was intended to give best possible overview and versatility. It is called cell step control sequencer because in fact every step is a cell of variable play length in bars (from 1 to 8) plus options to set up different sub-tempo settings for Bass, HiSq, HiHat and Perc 3-5 part and assigning an Athmo or One Shot wave for every 2nd step with adjustable level and tuning.

You can determine harmonical scale steps to be used for each step independently to be played by the Pad parts and used as starting note for Bass and HiSq patterns. These scale steps are derived from the currently selected scale. For every 8 steps there is the option to set up a different base note to transpose the next 7 steps accordingly. Also you can determine step ranges to be played e.g. from step 5 to 12 or so.

Major differences between registered Pro (i.e. enhanced) and the free version:

  • Presets/patches: Pro = 64 / Free = 4 fully useable and 28 with additional voice overs at varying intervals during playback and forced switching of edit panels - anyway switching back to any other panel is possible;
  • Athmo/One shot Part: Pro 100 waves / Free = only 60 waves;
  • MIDI Out: Pro for all internally generated note events / in Free = not present;
  • MIDI In: Free only for MID CC while Pro offers MIDI In for playing notes and triggering of instruments thus might use the Pro version even as 4 part multi-timbral sound module with two 8-voice pad synths and two monophonic synths.

I am so utterly blown away by the immense depth and ridiculous amount of power presented in XWOFIII that I do not even know where to start dribbling over this beast.

A few things I can tell you after 20 minutes of playing and being swept away by this new VST...

XWOFIII is without doubt, without question, without even so much of a snickle of an iota of a particle's tiniest quark, the absolute MOST AMAZING SYNTHEDIT CREATION EVER, PERIOD. THIS IS IT. It's all downhill for SynthEdit creations from here folks. XWOFIII is the apex of SynthEdit's abilities. You think I want to say that? Hell no! I'm in this business too. But the truth is the truth, and XWOFIII is KING, broken hearts and all. Neutral

XWOFIII is also, without doubt, without question, without any clever metaphorical crap I could spew the most amazing algorithmic music creation device ever. EVER. I have tried every single algorithmic music doo-hickery doo-dad there is out there my friends, and nothing, (no, sorry Rurik) nothing compares to this. XOWFII creates better music on the fly than 90% of all electronic musicians I've ever heard. If you want endless electronic new-wave / new-age albums for your own listening pleasure, all you need is XWOFIII. I can see many nights of letting XWOFIII just run in the background whilst I traverse the bowels of the net. tsk tsk tsk

XOFIII's GUI has an integrated help system that is GENIUS. Pure genius. Yet I must say why HG neglected to include rudimentary tool-tips is a mystery. Regardless, the integrated picture-reference tutorial built in had me up and running and fully comprehending XWOFIII in a matter of about five minutes. Bravo. Also the GUI is very easy to navigate, very easy on the eyes, and 100% non-confusing. I don't wear hats, but if I did, I'd take all of them off towards Vera, she's a QUEEN. I'm sure HG had plenty to do with the layout, so the others hats off to him as well.

Anything else I can say beyond all of that would be only specific little things that would bore you unless you were using XWOFIII yourself.

If you are in NEED at all of an algorithmic music creation device, THIS is it. If you aren't, XWOFIII is much, much more than just that.

hyper Thumbs Up! hyper

Look, whether or not you care what "Jack Dark" has to say, if you only garner one single thing from this post, let it be this:

You would be a fool, yes, a FOOL to not at least try XWOFIII out and experience the most amazing VST I have ever used in my entire five years of VST usage.

Product: Atonoise
Developer: H.G. Fortune
Type: Synth (Hybrid)
Price: Free / €9
OS: Windows
Formats: VST
Atonoise is a VSTi synthesizer (with Pro and VST effect versions too) for spooky, Sci-fi and other similar sounds. It has not got a filter, by design, and you'll hardly ever hear the basic waveforms of the two oscillators, which just provide different flavours to the modifiers. It works atonally, i.e. with no real defined pitch, therefore it is suitable for various kinds of spacey and noisy sounds, which are created by four modifiers: Inferno adds, via Inferno Mix, some upper harmonics generated from the input - very similar to the timbre feature of HGF's Swamp VSTi. Spook 1 and Spook 2 mod... [more]
