Airwindows has released SurgeTide, a "surge and flow dynamics" plug-in, and Distance, a "sound design or reverb far-away-izer" plug-in, for Mac OS X and Windows in AU and VST plug-in formats. Both plug-ins are free - donations welcomed via Patreon (which will lead to more free plug-ins, Linux versions and open source code...).
Distance is specifically set up to mimic through-air high frequency attenuation.

SurgeTide is a sort of dynamics plugin. It runs on three different compression time constants stacked onto each other like the waves in an FM synthesizer.
