BTE Audio has extended its line of Equalization Algorithms with the AEQ4, a high performance digital equalization algorithm that simulates the sound and feel of the world-renowned American Mixing Consoles of the late 1970s. With its proprietary topology, the AEQ4 algorithm simultaneously achieves both absolute sonic accuracy and extremely high processing efficiency. Targeted at desktop and embedded professional audio applications, the AEQ4 algorithm will enable "quality-conscious third-parties to incorporate the highly revered American EQ sound into their products".

AEQ4 - American Console Equalizer Algorithm

Smooth, proportional Q bands and inherently musical filters have defined the distinctive characteristics of channel equalizer modules designed for American consoles in the late 1970s. The AEQ4 Algorithm accurately and efficiently simulates these characteristics in the digital domain with its meticulously designed topology.

Key Features:

  • Extremely High Processing Efficiency.
  • Supports sampling frequencies up to 384 kHz.
  • Clickless parameter update.
  • Proprietary topology which is optimized for low latency, low noise and high dynamic range.
  • Supports both 32 bit (single precision) and 64 bit (double precision) floating-point processing.
  • Built-in reference-quality upsampling algorithm which can be enabled at sampling frequencies 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz to achieve bell shape symmetry at high frequencies.
  • Clearly and concisely implemented in pure C++: portable to any platform that is supported by a C++ compiler.

Specifications:

AEQ4 American Console Equalizer Algorithm features three overlapping bands and low pass/high pass filters which have the following specifications:

  • High Pass Filter: 12dB per octave slope. Cutoff Frequency is continuously variable from 20Hz to 3kHz.
  • Low Pass Filter: 12dB per octave slope. Cutoff Frequency is continuously variable from 200Hz to 20kHz.
  • Low Frequency Shelving/Peaking: Selectable filter type: Shelving or Peaking. Center Frequency is continuously variable from 40Hz to 800Hz. The amount of boost or attenuation is continuously variable from -12 dB to 12 dB in Peaking mode and from -16 dB to 16 dB in Shelving mode.
  • Mid Frequency Peaking: Center Frequency is continuously variable from 400Hz to 8kHz. The amount of boost or attenuation is continuously variable from -12 dB to 12 dB.
  • High Frequency Shelving/Peaking: Selectable filter type: Shelving or Peaking. Center Frequency is continuously variable from 800Hz to 16kHz. The amount of boost or attenuation is continuously variable from -12 dB to 12 dB in Peaking mode and from -16 dB to 16 dB in Shelving mode.

Applications:

  • Software Plug-ins
  • Digital Audio Workstations
  • Digital Mixing Consoles
  • Hardware Effect Processors

AEQ4 Demo:

In order to demonstrate the sound and performance of the AEQ4 Algorithm, BTE Audio has integrated it into a VST Plug-in. Please note that AEQ4 Demo requires a WIBU Systems CodeMeter Stick and it is only available to well-established audio hardware and software manufacturers.
