Monash University updates "Nodal" Generative Music Software to v1.9

Nodal (Monash University)

Monash University has announced the release of version 1.9 of its generative music software Nodal.

Nodal is a standalone generative sequencer that allows the user to create complex musical patterns based on the concept of a network of nodes (musical events) connected together by edges (transitions between events).

The edge length controls timing information. The user creates the network interactively and assigns any number of virtual players, who travel the network to create the composition. Nodes can feedback on each other, which means even very simple networks can generate complex musical patterns.

Nodal also features a MIDI trigger mode which allows the user to interactively play different parts of the network live, triggering sequences from any MIDI keyboard or controller device.

New features:

  • A new scales mode that sets a key signature and mode for each player.
  • Improved information display for networks: edge signalling and last note played for nodes.
  • Voice group muting: toggle muting for individual voice groups while a composition is playing.
  • Updates for the latest versions of Mac OS and Windows.

Price: $30 and a free 30 day trial version is available. A single licence allows the user to run both Mac and Windows copies simultaneously.
