Plughugger releases "EMP-3 Compression Synthesizer" for Omnisphere

Plughugger has released EMP-3 Compression Synthesizer, a soundset for Omnisphere 2 that explores the sound of digital sound artefacts.

EMP-3 is basically a normal soundset - but with one major difference. Instead of basing it on traditional analog waveforms - Plughugger took all those waveforms and processed them with the worst quality MP3 setting they could find. The sounds were then recorded back into Omnisphere in 96 kHz as the raw material for building the sounds.

Although this soundset was made with modern digital lofi in mind, many of the waveforms have a very interesting analog-like instability to them. A unique and almost organic quality.

Plughugger also provided the basic waveforms and the Omnisphere Patches in two different compression levels: 8 and 16 kilobits per second. 8 kbps is a more lofi and rough while 16 kbps is a bit less dirty - it sounds like it's a step closer to the original sound without the compression. On some sounds the difference is barely noticeable - and on some it's quite radical. Please see the two collections of waveforms as a bonus and source material for your own sound design.

Apart from the single sounds Plughugger also included 50 multi sounds where they created everything from complex layered sounds to small loops complete with drums and sequenced instruments.

EMP-3 contains 149 single sounds in the following categories (double the amount of sounds since they come in two compression rates):

  • 22 Arpeggios and Sequences.
  • 21 Drum and percussion.
  • 26 Pad and Strings.
  • 19 Bass sounds.
  • 35 Synth sounds.
  • 26 Textures and Soundscapes.
  • 50 Multi sounds.

Plus 176 INIT sounds for your own sound design.

Price: Until the 8th of April you can buy EMP-3 for 9.90 Euro. Use coupon code MP3ORGANIC to get the discount. Ordinary price is 19.90 Euro.
