I DL'd the Dragon along with a few other drum modules in search of something that could make a very particular sound - an electronica version of a kind of hand cymbal I heard on a 70s compilation of czech folk music, since you ask - and blimey, a few tweaks of a preset and there was almost the exact sound I needed, and soon many other percussion sounds I was looking for but couldn't get right before, and then plenty more sounds I didn't know I was looking for till I tried it. OK, so it has that all grey MAX/MSP look, but it's an inspiration.

Till now I used Attack for this kind of thing, very powerful but it's fiddly and unpredictable. That I have now started using the Dragon is big recommendation. The Dragon is simple but capable of a very wide range of sounds, specially good at the kind of is-it-electro-or-acoustic stuff I like best. It's very easy to see how to get from the sound it's making to the sound you want. Not unpredictable so much as fresh-sounding.

USER INTERFACE - What is it about people that need flashy bells and whistles and a colorful veiw to make a vsti useable...who cares about how it sounds if it has a crap interface its nothing ****insert eyerolling here****. well Maybe this synth has a bland look but thats not what matters.

SOUND - this synth is a percussion maker and what it does it does good, but judging by an earlier reveiw the guy must have had no idea what he was doing, the synth gives you a variety of wavforms from tri to noise. use the noise wavforms for hats and electronic percussion sounds. the square and saw can even make some nice bass sounds. I have heard people say the bassdrum has no character but I don't think they have tried the clip slider, bring it down and the bd will really punch...in fact bring clip down alot and you have instant hardcore or if your like me and liking the hardstyle bass sounds, attack out the thump of the drum and leave the tail and you have a hardstyle bass which is able to follow your melody which is an advantage to just using a hardcore bassdrum sample stuck on one note.

FEATURES - multiple wavforms for making many sounds, a very good filter with high resonance capabilities and has high and bandpass besides the standard lowpass. it has a very useful adsr that has a very snappy decay for percussion sounds, the clip slider is my secret weapon, and many options in the oscillator section to change the sounds espeically fm.

DOCUMENTATION - well this was tricky as its in japanese, but I translated it with altavista (do the same) but the synth is pretty self explanitory.

PRESETS - the developer included a nice little bank to build upon but it doesn't show the big possibilities of this synth imo, though the slash preset was very usable on this end.

CUSTOMER SUPPORT - this is a hard one seeing as i have never needed support so....

VALUE FOR MONEY - Its free and its good go get it (if your a person who cares only about a gui...well don't get it)

STABILITY - No crashes ever and my system begs for it so big thumbs up for that.

After to read so different previous reviews I was curious, I got it and I can't understand that negative review below.

Try yourself. A few seconds to download it and install it, you have nothing to lose and quite possibly you'll be amazed.

Easy use, great variety of possible sounds: drums, beautiful, weird; nice presets you can transform in amazing sounds; total stability, never crash; etc. etc.

A small wish: You can find a manual in Wantech website' forum, but it could go included in the zip. Anyway, it is very easy to learn to use.

Check out Drum Dragon, the presets are good examples of what can be done and it's free!

oh this thingy is lovely. punchy, deep and smooth sounds. perfect gui.. legible, no fuss.

multiple filters (well you see 'em) and cross osc mods make this vsti quite a little swiss army knife, esp. with some creative insert usage, and it's cpu friendly :)

the presets don't load up for me in logic 4.8.1, but no matter. you'll have your own bank in five minutes. like all wantech synths, it's got a flexible basic architecture that lends itself to cc automation.

finally, a viable alternative to static 808/909 samples for electronic drum fans..

and now it's FREE! brilliant!

GUI: non existent

Sound: I'm sure some Gameboy sound designers might appreciate it. Anyone who makes music won't

Features: Yes, it has some sliders. And that's all

Documentation: No english manual.

Presets: it's got some 10 presets. All of them totally unuseable... except to Gameboy sound designers.

Customer support: No english customer support. Come to think about it, what could one possibly need support about with this VSTi?

Value for money: 40$ isn't the world, but this VSTi simply doesn't justify ANY amount of hard cash. The author offers 3 other free VSTis as well, so clearly this isn't an issue of greed, but surely he must realize that in order to charge people, one has to make their product at least somewhat attractive - from a sound perspective as well as GUI as well as useability.

Stability: It doesn't crash.


I simply cannot see any use for this for anyone. I couldn't imagine who would buy it if it was 1$, let alone 40!Read Review
