Decimort is a high quality bit crusher.

Electronic music producers (especially in Hip-Hop) have always been aware that classic samplers (such as early Akai and E-MU units) had a character and sound of their own. They added a "grit" and "colour" to the samples and loops they played back which made them sound "Fat" and sit well in a mix. This sound colouration was due to the encoding techniques, lower sample rates, lower bit rate and conversion circuits which these early samplers used.

Decimort recreates this colouration and adds the vintage sampler magic to any loop, bass line or sound played through it. It also acts as the perfect bit crusher with filter.

Low quality sometimes is desired
The complex and advanced signal processing algorithms within Decimort simulate the behaviour of the whole sampling path which exists in every AD/DA converter. Decimort has no internal aliasing. The only aliasing effect present in the system is the modelled aliasing of the classic samplers d16 modelled when creating it. Undesired artifacts are not present in the processed signal. Only wanted artifacts remain. A further very steep low-pass filter, synchronised to the signal frequency, can be applied at the end of the signal path to absolutely ensure that no unwanted out-of-band signals remain.

More control

Decimort offers not only bit resolution and sampling frequency to tweak. It provides far more advanced features like:

  • Two optional anti-alias filters - A very steep low-pass pre filter (Approximative Filter) coupled with the resampling frequency that removes all harmonic content above it, ensuring no aliasing will appear below this frequency in the spectrum. A further post filter (Image filter), also synchronized with the resampler, gives control over amount of aliasing images appearing above resampling frequency when enabled.
  • Adjustable Jitter - Introducing short-period, random fluctuations to the resampling frequency producing different type of harmonic distortion.
  • Two quantization methods - Two available quantization methods; the mid-raiser and mid-tread decimation algorithms, each of them characterized by a drastically different dynamics response.
  • Controllable dithering - Conceptually developed as means to reduce audible quantization errors by masking the harmonic distortions they cause. Here to increase number of ways in which the sound can be treated.

Two in one
Decimort is also equipped with analogue-like filters with adjustable resonance that allow further sculpting of the signal. These can be used to smooth the sound or remove more of the sonic artifacts introduced into the signal path by the modelling process.

Features:

  • Ultra accurate resampling algorithm (ADC emulation, no harmonics above 22kHz).
  • Approximative (pre) filter and Image (post) filter, both conjugated with resampler (new in v2).
  • Adjustable jitter (new in v2).
  • Quantization with controlled dithering (new in v2).
  • Two quantization methods (mid-raiser, mid-tread) (new in v2).
  • Analogue-like filters with adjustable resonance and cutoff.
  • Tag based preset browser (new in v2).
  • Two alternative GUI sizes (new in v2).
  • MIDI-learn functionality throughout (new in v2).
  • 64-bit internal processing.
  • No harmonic distortions at output (unwanted).

Magico.

Forgive my writing style, which often seems like a billboard ad. I can't help myself. — Tz.

INTRO
Decimort-2 by d16 Group is even more fantastic than it's predecessor. It boasts several new features, improvements, and extra control over the bit crushing process.

The technological limitations (low sample rate, bit depth, etc.) of vintage samplers helped to create their charm. I owned them all — Emu, Akai, Roland, Sequential Circuits, Ensoniq, etc. and this helps ease the pain of buying and selling those beasts. D2 brings back to life all the quirky, idiosyncratic noises, pleasing grit, grind, thickness, overtones, and harmonics without any ear-piercing shrillness. The vintage AD/DA converters tone is all there! Also included are analog-ish filters with resonance that are much wetter than most of the before-mentioned hardware samplers.

This plugin is often categorized as a bit crusher, but I think of it as a sound sculpting tool that offers high quality low quality color. As with all d16 offerings, this also has a cool name, sharp-looking user friendly interface, fantastic sound quality and functionality a la top-notch algorithms, and the support of an amazingly creative development team.

FAVORITE USES
• Low end and leads. I am loving this thing on bass lines, drum loops, and NIN-esq lead lines.

FAVORITE FEATURES
• Sleek GUI with size options.
• User-friendly.
• CPU friendly considering the serious crushing power.
• Excellent low-fi sound quality.
• Zero internal aliasing and no unwanted artifacts.
• Lots of control without the confusion.
• Re-sampler module provides deep shaping.
• Jitter enables ear-pleasing harmonic distortions.
• Price!
• Gotta love the D16 Group development team — they are cool, creative cats.

OTHER THOUGHTS
• Great sampler profiles/presets. Please add more! I could never have enough.
• Independent stereo channel processing has been dropped in a favor of adding the extra features like (advanced quantizer, images and approximative filters). D16 chose to go with advanced processing instead of independent stereo. I process in mono, so this is not a concern for me. Those who process in stereo will need to use two instances of Decimort-2 on separate channels within their DAW.
• After a week of noodling, I haven't looked at the well-written manual.
• Controllable dithering reduces quantization errors, which allows users more freedom to crush audio to bits and bits.

SUMMARY
D2 truly is "The highest quality low-quality effect you can buy." And, the price is great. I highly recommend this fine piece of audio software to anyone working with audio, who wants a bit of that vintage vibe. Used sparingly, this could become more than a tool — it could become a secret weapon! Tommy Zai gives Decimort-2, two mighty thumbs up that are ready, willing, and able to crush some audio. Thank you, D16 Group! Great stuff.

Decimort is impressive. I have tried several other bitcrushers and none of them have the depth of features or sound that Decimort has.

I have read some reviews that it's a CPU hit, but I don't see it. I have had 5 instances running in a project and hadn't seen it add more that 1% use.

On drums it can add warmth and harmonics, or it can completely destroy them. I bought it primarily for drum processing, but have used it on synths and basses to great effect. I don't think I'll go a single project without using it. Definitely essential and replaces every freeware crusher I have.
