Iron Oxide is a tape emulation plugin. Airwindows' claims it sounds as good or better than competing "Real analog tape sound, with its classic warmth, within the digital domain- rounds off peak transients and adds warmth to electronic and acoustic instruments" plugins, except at one-sixth the price, one-third the CPU load, and less digital artifacts on test signals such as sine waves. It has just one control, which controls tape speed.
Iron Oxide does this through convolution modeling of a carefully determined target impulse response which is synthesized on the fly to handle the flexible tape speed range of 1.75 ips to 150 ips, combined with the smoothest possible tape saturation non-linearity.
