MAutoEqualizer combines a powerful equalizer (including linear-phase version) and analyzer in a single window. It is the first software featuring the MeldaProduction Filter Adaption (MFA) technology, which can perform the equalization for you based on analysis of your recording and another recording or any spectral content you can "draw" using the MeldaProduction Envelope System (MES).

MeldaProduction says this has nothing to do with FFT. MAutoEqualizer is a parametric equalizer - filter adaption really configures only the bands. It does not suffer from distortion, transient smearing or other artifacts caused by simple FFT algorithms.

MAutoEqualizer provides an automatic equalization feature that lets you focus on what spectrum you want to get, not how to get it. With a standard equalizer you are listening to the spectrum and amplifying or attenuating frequencies. This is very difficult even if you are a very experienced user with advanced listening skills. With MAutoEqualizer you can make your recording sound like another song. You no longer need to be worried if your ears are objective.

You can make your recordings sound like some professional ones, or you can ensure all of the recordings on your new CD sound similar. Or you can draw your desired frequency response. In any case MAutoEqualizer will find out how to do what you want and configure the parametric equalizer bands for you.

Features:

  • 10 band parametric equalizer and linear phase equalizer combined with a powerful spectrum analyzer in a single window. You can see input and output spectrums along with the equalizer shape and controls. 7 filter types for each band - peak, low-shelf, high-shelf, low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, notch.
  • Automatic equalization - long-term analysis of average recording spectral properties provides information necessary to use MeldaProduction Filter Adaption (MFA) technology, which can configure bands to approximate the requested resulting spectrum for you.
  • Comes in two versions - zero-latency equalization and a linear phase equalizer implementing 3 equalization algorithms with (approximately) the same frequency response - true bidirectional filtering algorithm, FFT algorithm and standard non-linear phase equalization. Bidirectional filtering provides maximal accuracy and minimal noise ratio. As a supplement MAutoEqualizer implements a standard equalization and FFT algorithm adopted in most cheap linear phase equalizers. This way you check all of the methods and find the best one for each particular case.
  • Adjustable dry/wet mix - what is impossible for some equalizers due to phase alteration is not impossible for MAutoEqualizer.
  • Includes comparisons to most modern styles - when you need to master your recording, you typically get some professional recording to compare it to. MeldaProduction has analyzed more than 80 well-known songs for you. So if you don't know or do not want to bother searching for some particular tune, just select an analysis of a song and let your recording sound like it.
  • Averaging, smoothing and magnitude normalization features help optical recognition and accuracy of automatic equalization.
  • Advanced, easy-to-use, user interface - You can easily change all values and gain maximal accuracy using ctrl shortcuts and textual editing. Smooth visualisation of resulting frequency response with almost unlimited zooming. All parameters are adjustable from the graph with advanced controls, integrated help using F1 or "?" buttons.
  • Q in range 0.05 to 10 with protection against pops and crackles.
  • Adjustable upsampling 1x-4x for an accurate response and ability to perform processing in 192kHz and higher sampling rates.
  • 64-bit processing and unlimited sampling rate - recommended maximum is 384kHz.
  • Very fast, optimized for SSE and SSE2 processors.
  • Full automation - not recommended for the FFT mode.

Though the review terms do not allow comparisons to other similar products one can't help to do so when it comes to Melda's AutoEQ. Afaik there are only two creations on the market that do what AutoEQ does: Automatic equalization (however, I'll try to focus on Melda's specific pro's and con's). It means that the software suggests EQ settings to adapt your sound to known and working productions. If you ever need to master a whole CD with several tracks it also supports you finding a common sound for all tracks - a typical mastering task which may not be typical for the ordinary KVR visitor (like me).

UI: If you're familiar with the constantly growing range of Melda's plugins you'll notice the 'corporate design' that profits from a resizable UI window. Values can't be typed in but this is possible in other Melda plugs so this should only be a question of time. The unique Multiparameter-options as well as 8 preset slots underline that the developer codes plugins 'with a twist'. In addition the possibility to submit presets from within the plugin is a nice idea found in every Melda plugin.

Sound: Well, it's an EQ (with additional linear phase option) therefore I leave this category to the reader's ears and imagination. (Rating=10)

Features: The main and rocking feature is the plugin purpose itself. If you work with comparison tracks while mixing/mastering (which should be common everywhere) you'll like that you really 'see' the difference instead of hearing it. This is where AutoEq becomes a real help for people not being skilled as Grammy-winners or suffer from a non-pro monitoring room. But AutoEq does more: It equalizes your target material according to the source file a.k.a. your comparison track with a single click. You may want to refine the result with the in-built 10-band-EQ (the most powerful EQ of the Melda-range) afterwards or simply use the dry/wet slider to come close to your wanted result. At this point AutoEQ is not only a tool but also a tutor helping you to find your way thru the frequency jungle: It shows the weak points and it makes suggestions. Great!

Documentation: Noone expects Melda to deliver Mixing&Mastering cookbooks with their plugs. On the other hand well done manuals do not hurt. Though every information is available upon pressing the "?"-button the developer will not earn awards for his implementation.

Presets: There are a few pre-recorded source files but every user will most likely use their own material. I think it's not necessary to provide or rate presets here. (Rating=10)

Customer support: Visitors of Melda's subforum on KVR are blown away by the speed of implementing changes and feature requests - and so I am.

Value for money: Mixed emotions... being part of the MTotal bundle AutoEQ can be cheap especially if you managed to grab the 'discount weeks'. As a single purchase it's still affordable but pricey compared to ...oops... I shouldn't say that. On the other hand it has strong advantages like VST-implementation and ease of use which makes it stand out compared to xxxxxx. Like always you have to decide yourself.

Stability: No issues noted.

Conclusion: I don't want to miss AutoEQ because it helps to improve my mixes day by day. It makes comparisons easier and much more comfortable. If you need to master a whole CD you'll love the assistance of AutoEQ, too.

I’ve lately been use the MAutoEqualizer or the MAutoEqualizerMini to control most of my bass and drum tracks.

I often use it together with the MDynamics and MDynamicesSideChain this gives me predictable and easy control over my mix and puts the drum and bass in the right place.

One of the things I like about the MAutoEqualizerMini is how easy it is to adjust and tweak the parameters on the fly by dragging and dropping or by entering parameters for precision. Instead of a fancy interface trying to mimic hardware equivalent (real or imaginary), the user interface is taking advantage of the fact that this is a plug-in running on computer display – not a computing screen trying to look like a piece of hardware. It works for me in getting the job done and focusing on the task at hand.

The sound is great. I like the fact that when I’m working with an EQ my focus in on EQ’ing. If I want to fatten up the sound by adding vintage harmonics I usually prefer doing that at a later point in the chain after I’ve gotten everything under control and into its rights place.

GUI:
----
The GUI is to-the-point, intuitive and easy to use.

Sound:
----
The sound is clean and transparent and provides precise control.

Performance:
---
The CPU hit is very limted. Which is good as I find myself using multiple Melda plugins on multiple tracks these days.

Presets:
----
Only a few. Then again I don’t really find that I need them.

Documentation:
----
There is great documentation at the Melda Production web site.
