White Noise Audio Doppelmangler

Doppelmangler is a more than worthy successor to White Noise Audio's brilliant Additive. It's not only incredibly easy to use, but it practically taunts you to experiment with what it can do.

Doppelmangler's resynthesis engine can mangle and morph both sounds and images into something amazing. You can export wav files as images for a very unique way of 'visually editing' sounds. Envelopes can be tied to almost anything (like morph) via the mod matrix. A myriad of non-destructive 'MangleFX' and filters help shape and refine your sonic palette. Finishing touches can be made with more traditional effects (delay, chorus, distortion, etc). As simple (and fun) as it is to 'program,' it comes with some great presets that you can tweak or use as a boilerplate for your own sounds. Lastly, it's skinnable, so not only can Doppelmangler sound however you want it to, you can dress it up however you like as well.

White Noise Audio's customer support is extremely good and the developer is very attentive to user input.

I haven't had this much fun with an instrument in quite some time. Nearly everything I throw into it becomes something new and interesting. Sounds coaxed from it have more 'soul' than I would have ever expected, given the random inputs and 'let's try this' attitude I've taken with it. It's brilliance lies in the fact that you don't have to be a sound engineer to get amazing sounds from it. Load in various images or samples from your harddrive, and start drawing, twisting knobs and routing envelopes and you'll get something incredibly musical and very unique.

db-audioware Quantum-fx

quantum-fx by db audioware is billed as the ultimate audio effect system. In every way this lives up to it's promise. With quantum-fx, you instantly get 50+ excellent effects that cover a very broad range of needs. In addition, you have access to the 'workbench' which allows you to create your own effects from scratch or modify any of the existing effects to suit your particular needs. You even have control over the graphical interface.

The bundled effects are categorized under three headings: The Studio Pack, the Creative Pack, and the Classic Pack. Everything you need to mix, master and mangle is covered. I find the Creative Pack to be of particular interest since it's something very different. Each effect has a number of presets, and it's easy to create new ones.

The documentation covers just about what I'd expect. Because you have access to the 'source' of all the included plugins, the rest practically documents itself. If you're interested in learning about how various effects work, it's an invaluable amount of insight. Feel like experimenting? You can.

What is especially nice about quantum-fx is that the plugins actually feel and work exactly how you'd expect VST/DX plugins to work. Often times products that allow you to 'create' effects or instruments feel or work differently because of their modular nature. I applaud db audioware for following all the way through it's product implementation to make the overall user experience exactly what one would expect from a plugin.

I use both the VST and DX versions (depending on the host) and I've had no issues with stability.

From classic to interesting new effects, practically everything is covered in this plugin suite. Couple that with the ability to create, modify, take apart and assemble any of the effects included and you have an extremely powerful tool at your fingertips. Even if you never go any further than use the bundled effects, it's a very worthy addition to anyone's audio arsenal.
