Absolutely brilliant control. The precision that I can design percussion tracks with this instrument is definitely unmatched. It's fast and sounds great. Highly recommended.

Baervaag - FM Synthesizer

Version reviewed: 1.3.1 on Mac

If you like the FM sound but get overwhelmed tweaking many carriers and modulators, you will enjoy exploring the pure tone of this one carrier/one modulator synth with many quite clever controls:

The CARRIER has an XY pad with PWM x sine-square wave shape; an envelope with an attack modulated by velocity; and feedback to control how much the Carrier is modulated by the Modulator, and optionally by MIDI velocity.

The MODULATOR has the same XY pad but you can multiply the frequency value of the note played from 0.5 to 4x, and you can set the ADSR so each value can be higher or lower relative to the CARRIER.

EFFECTS include a pitch/amplitude wobble with control on frequency and depth; a LP resonating filter based on the Carrier or MIDI velocity; a delay with BPM and note length, feedback, HP/LP and dry/wet mix; and a chorus. Full featured demo available, $25 but can be bundled and goes on sale.

This synth has been around for several years, so there are good youtube tuts by various folk.

Maybe usable for bass and synthesizers, but for guitar this is not really my idea of a convincingly sounding distortion. Even if I changed the three bands, I did not really get any convincing tones, but this experience I also made with some other multiband distortion plugins.

A classic pedal distortion like a RAT or DS-1 still is a different league, although they also are far away from being perfect. But - at least for guitar - they are rather my idea of distortion.

REAMP - Audio Gear Modeler

A lot of different analog sound simulations in a single plugin, from cassette and tape to various sorts of tube saturation and overdrive.

Works well in principle, adds some nice colorization, saturation or overdrive to your tone.

The dual four band controls are useful, but also may need some time for tweaking, but on the other hand allow much better control than a single knob plus a typical tone stack.

Can be used for mastering but also for guitar, bass or other instrument amplification. Tube bass amp is my favorite guitar tube sound, as it sounds beefier, fuller bodied, but the two guitar tube presets also sound nice, if properly adjusted.

I decided for Reamp against Stark, on which the different amp characteristics did not convince me so much, I also do not like built-in effects, as usually I prefer different ones or different sounding ones, but most of all I prefer using my own cabinet IR's.

But Reamp does a good job, also sounds good stacked with Freeamp in front and is sonically very flexible if you take some time for tweaking. Also works well with pedals and other effects.

Also can be used for some additional saturation or overdrive in front of a (more) typical guitar tube amp simulation plugin.

Switchable Harmonics intensity also is a good idea.

FreeAMP - Audio Gear Modeler

Nice, simple, but quite good sounding and working analog / tube saturator.

More American than British voiced in my opinion. I mostly use it with guitar, there you get some nice "Fenderish" tones with some good, sparkling, transparent treble and also some nice vintage overdrive.

In case you look for a "hotter" sound, stacking two instances also works well and can sound good.

Just add a good cabinet IR and you get some comparably transparent, but not digital sounding (tube amp) tones.

I like it but hate the GUI, a scaleable interface and darker colours would be appreciated, with that said, I think it's a very useful EQ.

It's easy to like Klevgränd and their approach to sound and graphic design, especially on the iPad where they are intuitive and quick. When ported to VST however they appear more like toys. Most plug-ins need some gain-staging to perform at their full capacity, and to do that You need some metering. This one has nothing of that, or at most a minimal amount. It's hard to fault the sound however, loud sounds better, and this one goes really loud without any obvious artifacts. It works great on a digital source without background noise to even out the sound and make it louder, but I wouldn't trust it on an acoustic recording or the master bus. It's true that if it sounds good, it is good. But I personally would really like some more control. It just doesn't feel right if I can't verify my settings visually after some hours of mixing. The GUI looks great and is intuitive, maybe if they add some more controls and meters in an expert mode I would use it more.
