Hi All,
I have a new synth in pre-release phase. Substance is a two oscillator virtual analog, with a semi-modular architecture, so it's easy and fun to work with, and in my opinion it sounds pretty good. It's really important to me that the factory bank of presets sounds great, so if you enjoy programming synths, your help would be welcomed. You can download Substance here (brief manual included in download):
http://www.mediafire.com/file/xjnzt0nma ... stance.zip
And you can contact me here:
http://tactilesounds.blogspot.com/
http://groups.google.com.au/group/tactile-sounds
or of course PM/email me.
It would be helpful if patches were labelled with your initials, the kind of sound, and a name, for example:
TS Bass Electro 01
and very, very helpful if they were saved as presets rather than a bank.
Thanks in advance,
Tactile Sounds.

HI everyone,
i was asked to do some patches for TS Substance by Jónathan some days ago. At the moment i have 16 patches and the first 12 are already included in the current version.
By this you could maybe see that i like this synth. Sounds very nice, especially for a synth based on SynthEdit (no general discussion about SE here please...).
It has a special feature called "Spread" where each voice gets up to seven voices which are spread in the panorama which sounds a bit like a mixture of a hypersaw and unison. This is very nice for pads and strings. The two filters are also nice. The first one is a 4-pole LPF and the second a 2-pole SVF multimode filter with LP, HP, BP and BR where the amount of each filter could be controlled with a knob so you could use all at once.
OSC1 could be used to do FM with OSC2 and it uses harmonics for the coarse tune instead of semitones for easier FM results.
The synth doesn't contain FX or an Arp but that's not what the synth is build for. A goal was also to have all modules on one page with some drop-down menus for modulation etc. Another goal was to have only features you really need, not to have another "monster" synth with 1000 features which is really a nice thing sometimes.

Hi
Iv'e been playing about with this little *Gem* for the past half hour and it's a really good synth.
You can get some great Electro and Retro sounds out of it no problem at all.
Everything is well laid out and the UI is very nice to look at.
I haven't explored all features yet but even after 30 mins it's easy to get used to.
PS
Is this a free synth?
@Ingo
Nice patches
A definate thumbs up for this vst *SE or not*

nice to see we have the same taste.
Yes, the synth is quite nice, especially for SE like i wrote above. I don't know about Substance but TS-808 seems to be Donationware so you could give money or not:

If you also start doing some patches for Substance nothing could go wrong i guess.
BTW at the weekend i have to stop playing with Substance since i finally want to finish my Blofeld patches (only a few missing) !!

Thanks for the kind words.
Substance will be free in the sense of "It's your shout!"
It's hard to make a living as a musician, so "pay what you can afford" effectively means that it's free, but I would really appreciate any amount at all. I'd like to be able to pay Limeflavour for his graphic design, I'd like to be able to pay sound designers, I need to get some monitors: - if everyone who downloaded the TS-808 had sent me a dollar, I could.
Payment in kind is also great - if I had to program all of the presets, half of the "factory" bank would end up being electro basses. Ingo's patches are great, and completely different from anything I would have come up with. I'm hoping for more inspiring stuff from other KVRians.
@ Rob: if you send me some money, you'll be breaking the drought.

Well you have a really good synth here and i'd put a $5-10 price on it just so you make something back for yourself It's probably worth alot more IMO but i'd stick a price on it mate just so you can get yourself some new gear and pay Limeflavour for his great work as usual.
Great UI aswell
and i'll do some free patches in my spare time too.. no strings

I don't charge anything for 'free' projects that I like, so you shouldn't feel that you have to pay me Jonathan. It's my way of paying back to the community of freeware developers.
Substance is really a great synth, I only wish I knew how to program synths properly.

TS808 is excellent. Substance is looking up to be a quite good synthesizer as well, I've just to learn myself to program it proper.

At the weekend i made more patches for TS Substance, at the moment they are 45. You could download them here:
UPDATE 10.7.2010 (96 patches + fixes for latest version):
http://rapidshare.com/files/406107742/I ... t.zip.html
link for the latest version of Substance: http://www.mediafire.com/file/jmgoetzww ... stance.zip
or here: http://groups.google.com.au/group/tactile-sounds
The categories of the patches are at the moment:
- Leads
- Synth Brass
- Synth Strings
- Pads (e.g. Filter Sweeps, Vox, FM based Vox)
- Bells (e.g. FM based)
While programming the sounds i found that Substance has a really outstanding sound quality, really fat and warm. The set of features and the GUI are almost perfect for what it does. The GUI is really fun to work with.
The voice spread feature is perfect for pads, Strings but also other categories. The result is much better than having "just" a Chorus FX. Basically the result is like a combination of unison (or hypersaw) and a Chorus.
Ingo
PS: Some patches also use the new Aftertouch/Modwheel modulation.

Thanks Ingo,
The patches are great. Truly excellent work. I really appreciate your methodical approach, the way you've produced subtle yet distinct variations on your basic sounds.
I'm working on organizing all of the current presets, also planning to add a couple more features (filter routing and balance), will provide an update shortly, but any patches that people might be working on at the moment will be compatible.

many thanks for you positive feedback. Some of the patches are based on my Blofeld patches or my patches for other synths like e.g. Strobe, some of them are my "standard" patches for every new synth and other are used to "explore" the features and possible sounds of TS Substance.
I must admit that some of the sounds which i reprogrammed from e.g. my Strobe patches sound as good or better than the original.
Like you already said i like to do variations of some of the patches but only if they are significantly different. One example is a Lead sound where i introduced the legato mode instead of the retrigger mode. The basic sound is the same but while playing it sounds quite different.
Features which i didn't use much so far are the Ring Mod or the LFO filter modulation which are "goals" for the next patches. Maybe i'll also try to do some basses which i didn't do so far. Also some more keys like organs or EPs could be possible. At the end i want to have at least 64 patches (or more) for this first Substance bank.
BTW a Modwheel / Aftertouch modulation like in the LFO would also be nice for the filter modulation (in the drop down menu). This way you could change the Cutoff by the Modwheel or aftertouch which would introduce more variations in the patches.
At the moment it's possible to do filter "wobbles" by triggering the LFO with aftertouch/Modwheel which is also nice.
UPDATE:
For the latest patches I already got 27 downloads at Rapidshare (in around 26 hours). Seems like some people are really interested in TS Substance...
