Strum annoys me because it only lets you strum whereas my usual playing style is to pick or combine picking with the occasional strum. It's a lot more comprehensive but it doesn't do what I want, although strangely it sounds more realistic than String Studio does.

You can easily disable auto strum and use manual strumming. I think the biggest issue with strum series is the note range; I cannot play as high as I would like with them.

Can you? Turning off auto just results in no sound for me.

You should check the quick reference sheet under the help menu. It shows you the manual strum keys, palm muted downstroke, upstroke keys, how to pick individual strings on a chord and all that. Use them in combination with the notes you press and the sound will come out.

he doesn't seem to be using any modifier keys but I can't find what setting to make it play freely like that - all I get is no sound or muffled sounds - maybe it's Tracktion?

It's very good, the left side stuff adds a lot of what I was looking for, harmonics, mute type stuff. Latency? What the heck.
