Hello!
I want an ok sounding VSTi rompler (they still call them that?) for scratch drums before recording real drums when I'm writing.
Toontrack stuff is too expensive/extensive for my needs.
The Sonivox stuff gets really bad reviews regarding stability.
I currently use the MT power drum kit, but it's very processed/pop and doesn't really suite my music.
Any ideas would be great!

You can get XLN Audio Addictive Drums 2 with one kit for starters, for example the Fairfax Vol 1, at JRRShop for $67.15 USD in the cart with automatic discount.

Fairfax Vol. 1 features a vintage Gretsch "Stop Sign" kit with a Craviotto Custom Shop snare and an ultra-rare Tama Bell Brass snare (nicknamed "the Terminator"). The ADpak includes 31 professionally-designed presets that deliver beefy, punchy, muscular drums—the kind of sounds that make American rock great. If you need further inspiration, our American Rock MIDIpak has tons of professionally played beats (all based on great rock songs) to get you started.

Manda MT Power Drumkit.
Free, extensive enough but not silly, good enough sound.
Perfect for scratch tracks.

SM Drums is free, and doesn't sound very processed - just sort of "normal" and middle of the road. Reaper, Kontakt (full) and Sforzando versions - not an independent VSTi, though a VSTi is apparently in the works.

Aly James drums are different than previously mentioned ones and certainly worth a look.

They are still doing the Cakewalk Home Studio giveaway, it contains a few OK sounding drums included.
Even if the piano player can't play, keep the party going.

The NI Abbey Road drummers are really quite good for what they are, and are actually decently versatile if you route everything through separate outputs and mix it yourself outside of Kontakt. You can often find them pretty cheap on the marketplace. I got the 60s and modern drummers for about $30 each on the buy/sell forum here a few years ago. They have aged quite well in my opinion.
