I'm the developer of G2500, a virtual ARP 2500 created in software. I started this project a few years ago, because I came to realize, I needed this monster of a synth, and that I would probably not be able to get my hands on one anytime soon.

I created this software from original material like the ARP 2500 manual with all the modules, and also schematics of the electronics.
I wonder, how close my creation is to the real thing. It probably still needs some tweaking.

The final G2500 product was just released within the last week, and a free demo-version for MacOS and Windows can be downloaded from the G2500 homepage: G2500 Virtual Analog

Any response is very welcome.
I know, I will continue to use this myself, but I'm interested to hear others opinion also.

I have uploaded a full 6016 × 3616 pixels jpeg image of the G2500 synth showing the Vintage skin:

G2500-Vintage-full.jpg (3.7 MB)

The GUI is 1 : 1 (or very close) to the original ARP 2500 on a 15" portable computer with a 1680 x 1050 display, when you see the GUI in full zoom in. The GUI is zoomable.

The module heigth in ARP 2500 was 8".

Official videos on YouTube: G2500 channel

Notice, that the G2500 synth output studio quality 24bit/96kHz audio, and you don't get that from these videos, so the sound quality is lower in the videos than the real thing.
(We are working on improving the videos for best result possible in a video.)

New version 1.0.3 of the G2500 Virtual Analog synthesizer is released for MacOS and Windows:

Homepage: G2500 Virtual Analog

G2500 can now run in windowed as well as fullscreen mode. Many have asked for windowed mode. Thanks for the feedback!

From the release-notes:

v. 1.0.3, 12-Feb-2019
- Added better support for window mode
- Added "Fullscreen" toggle to Preferences/General
- Added splash screen, when G2500 is loading
- Improved keyboard support for right-hand command and alt

G2500 is a recreation in software of the legendary ARP 2500.

G2500 now for Mac, Windows, and Linux

Post Fri Mar 08, 2019 4:07 am

The G2500 Virtual Analog synth, the virtual ARP 2500, has now also been released for Linux together with updates for the Mac and Windows versions.

All versions and updates to the Manual can be found on the homepage:

http://niclasen.name/G2500/

A new series of videos showing some of the functionality of the different modules in G2500 has been uploaded to YouTube in HD quality.

See the G2500 channel: G2500 @ YouTube

As YouTube do re-encoding of uploaded videos, the audio in those videos are not as good as the real thing. The raw videos with 24bit/96kHz studio-quality audio will be available from the homepage soon.

The module presentation videos with 24bit/96kHz audio directly from the G2500 synth are now available for download at this page:

G2500 Videos

As YouTube re-encode uploaded videos, the audio is of less quality, when viewed at YouTube, than in these original videos. As stated on the page, these original videos are each in a mkv container and holds a H.264 video stream and a 24bit/96kHz WAV audio stream.

Personally I don't think you had to completely copy the front panel, because I'm sure it could be done in a more efficient manner that doesn't require zoomable interface. But a commendable effort nonetheless!

EDIT: Also, say no to circular knob control! There are almost no virtual instruments which use this by default. This should be linear.

I have considered this deeply. What I found is this:

If you have linear control (up/down with mouse), you can access thousand or a few thousand positions directly depending on your screen resolution. That is 10-12 bit resolution. With precision control holding <Shift> (which you can now in G2500), we can maybe access 20-24 bit of control.

Each dial knob in G2500 can have more than a billion positions, so around 30 bit of information. If I only made linear control, we would not be able to access all positions.

With the current circular control method, you can move the mouse pointer a long way away from the knob - while holding the mouse button - and make very fine adjustments by going perpenducular to the direction to the knob.

But I have had this request from others also, and I will probably make it an option in the preferences in future update.

It should be the default because nearly all plugins work like that. And yes they all have 32-bit floating point resolution, nobody complained.

This looks very interesting for anyone who wants to learn the workflow of a Arp2500. I've been curious to test out this max/msp emulation from Asha tamirisa for a while but I don't think they ever shared it with the public so this is very welcome indeed.

I'll demo it later and leave a bit of feedback :)

32-bit fp precision (usually meaning - at best - the 10-12 bits in knob settings you mention) settings in most virtual instruments adds up to steppy, imprecise crap. Even when the sound is good, the lack of precision in settings is infuriating to me and wholly unnecessary. Bravo to you for trying to do better. Do not give up on the effort. There is an audience for better controls.

I'm interested in this as we had portions of a real 2500 back in school. I have downloaded the demo and will try it out!
