Can you chaps offer some advice?

Granular synthesis is something I have largely (and, it would seem, criminally) overlooked until now.

Can you suggest a freebie granular synth that I could have a play around with to understand the principal and see what can be achieved?

What plugs do the granular fans swear by?

In all seriousness. I think Reaktor has the best grainular synth tools. FOr out of the box fun try crusher x but be warned tht because it is a do anything synth, that it's going to make a lot of crappy sounds before you get something you like or even recognize.

Personally, I think reaktor is the best way to get into granular synthesis (there's a shitload of granular ensembles in the UL). Crusherx-live - http://www.kvraudio.com/get/729.html - has a lot of features and is supposed to be the knees of the bees but I wasn't overly impressed with the results I got. YMMV.

Otherwise there are quite a few effects that can give you similar sounding results to granular synthesis (basically, all allow you to create a very small audio buffer and then do funny things to it). I often mess about with these and create waves for loading into kontakt (or sx directly). Oh, yeah, kontakt - it has a terrific granular engine in it, too.

no one has sent me anything, but I threw together a demo (don't remeber the link off hand, but it's in the begining part of the pseudograins thread)... :wink:

in any case, I'm highly interested in granular type stuff... what I'd really like to know is how to handle zero crossings to prevent unwanted pops and clicks. For whatever reason tho, I'm not into stuff like crusher-X... I like things more primative sounding for whatever reason. :nutter:

Feel like I've been spamming lately but here is a project I started in Synthedit. As a case study I did a wavelet version of the oscillator. It finds teh zero crossings in real time travels along zero crossing to zero crossing. Sounds like shite though. Really mechanical.

It's more like a plucked orient style string instrument (I have no idea what's it's called tho.. hhehe)... made for decent mangling... but those high frequencies are pretty killer.. I think it needs some kinda filter in there or something to weed those out. As always, learning is work in progress! :hihi:

Maybe you just need a change of scenery? You could always try to arrange a visit to Camel's "secret skunkworks", nestled in the remote hills of West Virginia. :D
