How to make that sound...

Eeehm, George? With all due respect, but the guy's working on Mac (isn't Phantom Win only?) and he seems to own FM8 already. What use would Phantom be to him?

Post

iYM2151 architecture is almost the same as Phantom too… 4 operators and 8 algos.

Post

I thought he was Win/Mac. FM8 provides extended architecture and it's not the same as a classic 4 operator FM.

Phantom has 4 operators and is perfect for your goal...
will phantom open .opm files?

thanks for the links :)

I can't seem to import anything into VOTM on my mac. I'll try PC this weekend.

if that's the case I stand corrected :-)

I had no idea he/she had an account here. I'll PM them tonight!

I have seen that other thread and should have thought to post a link here since it's relevant. Thanks! I'll probably use those rips for referencing. Maybe I'll load VOPM on my Windows box and my music workstation on another so I can just eyeball it.

Isn't FM8's featureset a superset of what a 4 op is capable of? Or is there more to it than that?
"Operating the FM8 on Mac or Windows machines is identical, with some slight differences"

Maybe this new Plugwire http://diaphone.blogspot.ru/2010/12/11.html could help you.

A bit complex if you only want to design some sounds.

I'm using Crossover with Reaper. Works perfectly, and can load VSTs pretty well. I to set Wine to emulate a 1280x800 virtual desktop because some VST GUIs don't like behaving on normal environment.

You can certainly recreate 4-op sounds on a 6-op synth. You would probably have to adjust the envelope settings and operator output levels by ear, but if you have the 4-op instrument handy to do a comparison, it shouldn't be too difficult. It might be time-consuming, though. Yamaha's 4-op synths don't have as many envelope paramaters as the 6-op ones, and FM8 has even more parameters than either of those.

You may want to check out the demo of this: http://fm-alive.com/pages/DXM3.aspx. It now has support for 4-op synths, and can save in DX7 format, so you may be able to use it to convert 4-op to 6-op, then import that into FM8. I'm interested in its ability to save in SY77 format, as well as the standard DX7 format.

Fm formats converter DXconvert/TXconvert 2.0.0
http://dxconvert.martintarenskeen.nl/

Code: Select all

DXconvert can also read files with voicedata from 4-op FM synth
(TX81Z, DX21, FB01, etc.), 2-op FM synths (PSS-480/580/680), and
.opm files from VOPM (a free 4-op FM VST plugin) and converts
these to DX7 voices.

This looks promising. Especially if the VOPM conversion works. I'll check it out tonight.
