While it had it's moments IMO the latest NIN album 'With Teeth' was ok but had nothing on 1999's brilliant 'The Fragile' double album.
You trolls should go back & check it out on a decent set of monitors, in a decent room.

If the haters are still not convinced then perhapps it's just going a little over your heads?

Regardless of what one might think of his lyrics or whether one even likes his tunes, Reznors production skills are undenialbly second to none.

Given the unique & complex sounds the guy achieves, it's no surprize that his studio rig appears as intricate & complex as it does - & thats just the hardware.

It's very easy to look at a hardware collection like that and think that if you owned it, you would be in Heaven and your tracks would sound the fattest and most "posh" out there. But just think of the nightmare it would be to maintain and organize each and every link in the chain with such sensitive components.

And consider the amount of time and experience it would take to learn how to use the different pieces of hardware. It can be a serious challenge just learning all of the ins and outs of your software instruments and effects, especially understanding how to master dynamics. But as a full-time artist and producer, Mr. Reznor's job enables him the time and money to experiment with all of that stuff. It's what makes his signature sound unique IMO.

Now don't get me wrong, if I had a week to spend in his studio, I would be like a kid in a candy store. But I doubt that I would be able to knock out a complete track. I would get too distracted with all of the options. I may not like all of the stuff he's released but I do think he's a talented artist.

In response to Nuisances Sonores's comment about Skinny Puppy using this hardware during their "best years", IMO Cevin Key could use just about any hardware, modern or vintage (or something from a junk yard for that matter), and make an Industrial/IDM masterpiece. I was introduced to the Skinny Puppy sound when I was 15 (I'm 32 now). It was during study hall that a friend let me listen to Cleanse, Fold and Manipulate on his tape player. It was cued up to Anger, and after that and Deep Down trauma Hounds, I was hooked!! But I will save that for a different discussion.

If he (Reznor) can effiecently use this amount of gear - it's cool. I,personally, would prefer a hadware workstation (like Triton or Kurz), roland's digital multitrack and $300 active monitors, and be more productive with this than with 20000 kilograms of analog filters and modular things.
Some guys put their tunes together with just a piano, you know..everyone has his own way of doing things. But somehow I think that Trent Reznor just bought/rented all of this h/w just because he could, and not because he really needs it..

Wow, all that equipment and their music is still sub par. They must be skimming the equipment's potential.

DS is by far the best, but I liked a good 40% of The Fragile. Only heard a couple tunes of the last album With Teeth, and they didn't have the NIN magic to me.
