Not sure if I previously took the bait on this thread. Some things I own in the rack I can't tell you the make/model without looking at them.

But we're basically setup in two locations and one has become a chore to get to. We call that one the studio, which is a converted 10*12 bedroom. There we have:

Korg N5
Korg M3exp with Radias
Korg Radias
Korg Kronos X 88
Roland V-Synth-GT
Yamaha Montage 7

Roland R-70
Roland RMP-12
BOSS BR-1600CD

Korg pad Kontrol
NI Maschine Studio
Studiologic VMK-188+
Emu XBoard 61

ART Pro MPA II
TC-Helicon VoiceWorks+{x2}
MOTU 24IO
MOTU MIDI Express xt

Our other space is a smaller multiple purpose room. There, we have:

Studiologic VMK-188+
Emu XBoard 61
NI Maschine Mikro mkII
Korg nanoPad 2
Korg nanoKontrol 2
Sonar VS100

And there are three Behringer Eurorack line mixers looming about but not currently in use.

Since our drive between the two "studios" went from 17 miles to 88 miles and the spouse touch requirements are changing, we're contemplating some major changes though.

Previous keyboards???
To the best of my memory -
Baldwin 54a; F. Rhodes MKI Stage 73; H.Clavinet D6; Vox Baroque; ARP Axxe, SC ProOne & Drumtrax; Moog Model D; Memorymoog; Yamaha DX7/DX7s/Motif ESr/Motif XSr; VBE{2}; Casio VZ10m; Alesis: SR/SR+/QSR{2}/SR16; Roland: D5/D110/R70{2}/HPD15; Emu: MPS/MPS+/Proteus fx{2}/Proteus 2000/UltraProteus/Longboard XBoard25/XBoard 49; Novation XStation49; Peavey DPM V3{2}/DPM V2{3}/DPM SP; Kawai 3m/K4; Korg: K1/M1/Triton Extreme76{2}; Lync LN1

I was possibly not in a great mood when I wrote this, three years ago.

I guess I still don’t see the point of these lists, to be honest. Maybe the original question about synths that are particularly bad and should be avoided has some merit in terms of discussion, but otherwise, why does it matter what gear individuals can put on their lists? I’ll address that question instead, since I don’t keep a list of my gear and I have way too much to even keep track of in my own head.

My first synth was a Korg DW-6000. I’ve posted on here many times over the years that I consider it the worst sounding synth ever made.... obnoxiously bright and digital, and impossible to fit into a mix. Well, a funny thing happened. People kept talking about how great the DW6k and DW8k were. A friend whose opinion I trust kept talking up its filter. Espen Kraft posted a demo of his 8K presets, and darn it if they didn’t sound really good. Eventually I sort of realized that my DW-6000 hadn’t met my expectations back in the 80s and 90s because it didn’t have that classic Roland sound. I wanted techno and trance, but the DW was closer to a Microwave or PPG with those digital wavetables. There was really nothing wrong with the synth if I could accept it on its own terms. I’ve continued to see a significant uptick in conversation around these synths, and then there was a preorder on a really impressive hardware editor that can control both a 6k and 8K simultaneously. That made me think it was time to dust off my poor neglected 6k. And... um... I also bought a DW-8000.

Really? I'm the opposite. If you look at my list, which is chronological, you'll see that I had a lot of Roland gear until I discovered how much better Korg stuff sounded. To me, Roland has always been very middle of the road - nothing too terrible (except maybe the TB303) but nothing really great, either. Roland used to pack their synths with features but never really had a great sound. OTOH, even unloved Korg stuff like the Delta had a sound that I couldn't hope to get close to with any of the Roland synths I had. It was mostly in the filters, the Korg stuff had a real edge to the sound that I really liked. Still do. When I got the Axxe, it also showed up a lot of weaknesses in the Roland sound, only this time it was in the oscillators. The Korgs could cut it against the Arp but none of my Roland synths could.

I really hated the DW-6000 that I had for a while... but wonder how much my perspective would have changed since then. I think I owned it at the wrong time in synth history and for my own experience/tastes.

I loved the Poly-800 II in its day -- probably because the one I tried was a friend's and I was jealous.

I do generally prefer Roland filters over Korg though. I agree Roland is kind of ordinary sounding, but I just am not into the MS-20 filter sound, and the Monologue and Minilogue were just plain disagreeable when I tried them.

Buchla 20 modules, Arturia Origin, Yamaha DX200, Virus Snow, DSI Evolver, Little Phatty, Octatrack, Analog 4, Sceptre S8, Fender Strat CS, Fender Deluxe Reverb, Ibanez RG1570, Impulse 61, H9 and a broken JD-800 :(

I’m not criticizing Korg in general. They made some great synths. But at a time when everyone was using a Jupiter-6/8 or a TB-303, the DW-6000 was simply the wrong tool for the job.

This video changed my mind.

Also, in case anyone is interested, this is that new programmer. It’s expensive, basically the same price as my DW-8000 itself. But if you read what it’s capable of, it goes far beyond your typical classic programmer such as a PG-800.

How come? My DW8000 was something of a revelation for me. It was just so usable compared the the DX9 it replace din my rig and made lots of great sounds. Nobody thought about analogue or digital back then, it was just about getting good sounds and the DW8000 seemed full of 'em.

I had a Mk I but it was too limited to be of much use, so much so that I forgot about it yesterday when I was making my list.

I've never used an MS-20, not even the Legacy Collection VSTi (stupid UI with scroll bars).
Monologue and Minilogue were just plain disagreeable when I tried them.
Minilogue is a bit pedestrian but Monologue has real clout, especially with the DRIVE turned up. The thing with it is, you can always tone down a filter like the Monologue's but you can't ramp it up on something like Minilogue or Roland stuff when you want a bit more, so the Korg filter ends up offering more than the others. There is nowhere that is more obvious than with the Poly-6. On the face of it, it was a fairly limited synth but the sounds I can get out of the VSTi version I have are incredible and that's all down to its filter.
